Maternity clothes through summer?

My first child was born in winter, so only a few things will work for a west-coast summer. With #1 I was working, so I had bought a lot of work maternity clothes. Now, as a SAHM, I doubt I'll need a lot....

What types of maternity clothes do you think you'll buy to keep cool in the summer months? I assume Tees, tanks, cardigans (non maternity), and maybe a pair of jeans. Bathing suit... Maybe a skirt?

  • Agreed- long sundresses/maxi dresses, short sundresses, some comfy capris (I am not a fan of shorts) tanks t shirts. I am in your situation having had a June baby last time I didn't exactly have a lot of summer clothes but hopefully it'll be a fun excuse to shop.

  • DD was born in late July so I had a ton of summer clothes! I lived in skirts, maxi dresses, flowy shirts and flip flops. Get a good pair of flips, not the $1 ones. Old Navy has a great selection!

  • DS was born in late June so I spent the last two months in a rotation of maxi dresses that are now a little stretched out in the belly area!

  • I do mostly shorts and tanks with some dresses thrown in.  I stay at home and maxi dresses aren't always the best for getting on the floor and playing-although very comfortable.
  • I love cloth skirts and maxi dresses so i have a bunvh of those already. Ive picked up a pair of capris and a few more short sleeve shirts that were on super sale at khols (and I had a cupon!) And a few things a target. Need a few bathing suits but otherwise I think ill mostly stick with what I have!

I plan on shorts and capris mostly. I also SAH and while dresses are nice I don't know how much I'd want to wear them if I'm home most of the day.

  • I love the fold-over Old Navy skirts, lots of super stretchy tanks, and flip-flops. I am a SAHM, though, so no real work outfits. I did have some nicer stuff for events, but I basically lived in stretch cotton. Belly bands helped, too.
  • I pretty much live in skirts and dresses in the summer anyway, so I have a pretty good collection of maternity skirts and dresses.  For a bathing suit, I generally wear tankinis, and I only bought a maternity top, and wore my regular bottoms when I was pregnant.  I was able to find a lot at consignment shops.  Oh, and one pair of jeans from Old Navy, and those were the only item that I paid full price for, everything else was consignment or sale racks.

I think for my birthday next month, I might ask my mom to take me shopping for one or two nice maternity dresses for work, and a new pair of black flats that I can wear at work all summer.  The Motherhood section at Macy's had a couple of dresses that I liked the other day, and the flats I have at work now are from the summer I was pregnant with DD and are starting to look kind of ratty.

I had my son in August so most of my maternity clothes are summer friendly.  With him I lived in maternity shorts and maternity tees/tanks.  For me maxi dresses were like a blanket that trapped all the heat in which just made me hot and sweaty :( I was working from home mostly at that time so I could dress casual most days.  Now I work full time in an office so I'm going to invest in some work-friendly knee-length maternity dresses.  And then I can always wear them with maternity leggings this spring and towards the end when the weather gets cooler again.

Edit:  Also a maternity swimsuit.  I spent as much time as I possibly could in a pool or at the lake and I plan to do the same this summer!

  • Some of my clients are sex offenders, so we have a really serious dress code at work. Capris and skirts can't show more than 6 inches of your calves, sleeves must extend at least two inches beyond your shoulder- I can't wear anything super summery. I'll probably get regular work clothes but in light/thin fabrics.
  • Last pregnancy I was due in Sept and I lived in about 4-5 pretty sundresses, 2 maternity skirts, and capris on the weekends.

  • I plan to do mostly maxi dresses and jeans (which is my non-pregnant norm) but the maxis sometimes walk the line of being work appropriate. I also have to figure out an entire fieldwork wardrobe, which is hard because my normal picks don't come in maternity and I'm afraid all the cheap stuff is going to fall apart. Anyone do outside work and have recommendations for clothing?

  • I have been scoping out zulilly for work appropriate dresses as maxi dresses won't fly too well around here.  Same goes for capris and shorts.  I will need some maternity work pants and some decent tops.  I am one of those people who hates to wear the same thing each week so this will be tough as I don't want to break the bank buying clothes.

We have a goodwill near the house.  Maybe I should head over there!

  • I was thinking mostly shorts and maxi dresses and tanks.  B was due in June - so this will be my first time having to brave warmer weather while pregnant.

Oh, and Target has some cute maternity bathing suits.  They were the tankini ones which I think will be way more comfortable than a one piece.  Check it out though- reasonably priced and adorable.

  • My other two were born in August so I have all my old stuff. I really didn't have to buy that much since I'm a SAHM. Some shirts, a few tanks, a pair of capris, a pair of jeans, yoga pants, a swimsuit. I had a few dresses but never wore them, I felt like I looked really awkward in dresses.

A lot of my non-maternity tanks and shorts still fit and they worked fine for hanging around the house.

  • Maxidresses, skirts, and lots of tanks. I can't wear shorts to work so I stock up on capris.

  • I plan on lots of sundresses!
I'm actually praying a lot of my sundresses will still fit. I lost a lot of weight in the last 5 years and of course did not get rid of my bigger clothes, so I'm hoping I can find what box the skirts/dresses are in and they will work out. A friend gave me a lot of tops, so I'm REALLY REALLY praying I don't have to buy anything.

  • I wore flowy tanks from Old Navy and more fitted ones as I got bigger, and elastic waist capris from Kohl's. I wore my makeshift maternity wardrobe last summer and it looked good because of the styles I purchased. I didn't buy maternity clothes until it got cooler and all I got was a pair of jeans and some tops.

  • I'm a teacher so I'm off in the summer. YAY! I plan on lots of comfy pants: yoga pants, shorts, capris, skirts, etc. and lots of t-shirts. I hate my arms, so no tank tops for me.

I'll probably be in skirts and dresses once school resumes in August.

  • I wore a lot of dresses with my second.  A lot of my longer non-maternity sundresses worked for awhile too, until I started getting bigger.

  • I think I may be the only person NOT excited for clothes.  I bought a belly band to try and stay in my clothes for a bit longer, but I know come summer I will have to break down and buy stuff.

  • My daughter was born in January so all of my maternity clothes are winter. Boo! I am a teacher so I'll probably live in stretchy pants and sundresses this summer.
  • I work in a bank, so no capris or summery tops for me.  My work pants I wore with DD will still be fine.  At home, I'm just going to wear t-shirts and shorts/sweats.
