Just a thought...

If the first trimester is SOOO important developmentally for the baby, why don't doctors/midwives see us more often? I pondered this my first pregnancy and really feel it this pregnancy. I understand there is not much they can do, but why then all the stress about how the first trimester is so important and crucial to development?

Guess this is one of those age old questions like, Why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways?

Re: Just a thought...

  • I wonder this as well,  when I called the office to ask them what to expect @ my first appt,  she said there would be bloodwork and they would go over the do's and don't's with me.     This is at 7 weeks.  I didn't even get a "make sure you are taking prenatal vitamins"  from them.    Good thing I have this here internet  ;)

  • I think doctors make the assumption that women are smart enough to understand prenatals (although to be fair, I couldn't keep ANY of them down enough for them to matter with DS and he turned out fine). I was also under the impression that prenatals were more effective before conception than after, although I could be wrong.

I think that if they saw women more in the first tri, they wouldn't have any time to see the women in their second or third trimesters, though. As for my MW, she has all the pertinent information on her website and I have talked with her a lot even though I don't officially see her for another handful of weeks.

  • My doctor won't see me until 11 weeks and my 1st pregnancy was semi high risk, and I'm a c-section mama (ds is only 10 months, and they reccomend waiting a year to TTC after c-secons) I went to the er last night for some bright pink spotting (everything looked great) it was there my pregnancy was confirmed! Wft??

This exactly. I'm don't understand why more visits to the doctor would be helpful? Maybe I'm missing something.
  • I kind of had the same thought- it seems like this would have been more of a concern pre-Internet. I think they wait for visits so that they aren't over run but the early losses as cynical as it sounds.
  • Yeah what would they do? I will see my dr at 6w, 8w and then possibly an ob at 10w and 12w. They still don't do much but check on me and bean. There's nothing they can do. It's up to the mom to do the best she can. That said, the body knows that first tri is very hard and keeps the baby safe knowing that m/s may keep the mom from eating much at all.

I also couldn't take PNV's with DS. I was sick for the first 21w. He turned out fine.

  • I will only see my ob maybe once before getting my 1st ultrasound. I not saying that I would like more appointments. I just want the first one to come faster so I can hear the heartbeat and feel more secure. It never feels real till you hear the little baby in there making a little noise.

My 1st ultrasound will be at 20 weeks
  • Of course the first trimester is important developmentally, but it's nothing that a doctor can really help with. What happens is going to happen. The only point I can see is to give the mom affirmation, I guess? And that's not really medically necessary.
