1 week old CHUGS his meal.

My little one is fed formula and breast milk.  We bought him bottles that were supposed to be similar to the mother's breast, so the transition would be smooth. This child CHUGS every meal. He eats it with a desperation like he hasn't eaten in weeks. Sometimes he'll make himself cough because of how fast he's drinking.  I'll sometimes take the bottle for a second to give him a breather and slow him down, but that probably just introduces more air into his tummy.  He will get gas that lasts for hours, and I know it's because of that. I have never encountered a newborn who ate this fast. He has 3 oz every 3-4 hours, and he is done in less than 5 minutes, and that includes the time that we take to burp him! We burp him every 1/2-1 oz. We gets burps out of him every time. I know I bought the slow flow nipples, because I double checked before I bought them.  Does anybody have any ideas on how to slow this kid down??  I feel bad that he feels sick, plus I'll admit, it's a bit frustrating to deal with constantly. I can hear his stomach gurgling as we speak, and he ate almost 2 hours ago.

    Our LO was like this too from about 3-5 weeks.. Try to feed him before he lets you know he is hungry.. We knew he was eating every 3 hours so at about 2 1/2 we would go ahead and offer feeding (I breastfed and bottle so whichever he was getting at the time). If he refused obviously we would stop, but try again a few minutes later. When he is ready to eat he is READY and sucks it down. So trying to be ahead of his schedule (haha, right..) may help! :) good luck!

    If he's a week old, he may also be hitting the 7-10 day growth spurt.

    My LO was like this. He was eating 4 ozs sometimes in one sitting at 2 weeks. He kind of reverted/evened out...he's 7 weeks now and his big meals (first in morning and after his long afternoon nap) are still usually only 4 oz. mostly he eats about 3 ozs. We attributed it to him just trying to catch up after birth or a growth spurt. I agree with trying to get him before he is too hungry...if he usually eats every 3 hrs, watch the clock and offer a bottle at 2 hrs 30 minutes. Good luck!
