Cervix balloon

Hey all!

So Stuff is TOTALLY real now as I just got to hosp to start my induction. They are gonna start tonight with cervadil and the balloon catheter to stretch my cervix. Have any of you had this done? I'm scared its gonna be mighty painful (the nurse kind of ignored the question when I asked if it would hurt).

Totally freaked now....just sitting here chillen with DH waiting for something to happen is totally driving me nuts!

Ill take any advice I can get. Fingers crossed everyone for a speedy delivery! Thanks!

Re: Cervix balloon

  • I've helped put balloon catheters in (never had one myself, though) and people have always just said it's about the same as any cervix check when it's placed, and then feels like lots of pressure when the balloon gets filled. I've never had anyone complain of pain during it!

Good luck! I hope you have an outside baby soon!!

  • I had it done! The Cook balloon...

It didn't hurt at all, just made me feel a little crampy...but that's it's job! The worst part was ripping the tape off of my leg the next day (they taped the tubes onto my thigh)

Funny story, little embarrassing. I had it in and HAD to go the bathroom. It was the following day and I had it in for maybe 18 hours out of the 24. While taking my poo...the "balloon" came out. I caught it in my hands and didn't know what the hell to do! I wrapped it in paper towels and left it for the nurses, who I called right after. It's supposed to come out when you dilate 3cm but when they checked me I was just shy of 2....

All the nurses loved giving me a hard time about giving birth to a balloon....my pushing caused it to come out early. Later they told me that it must not have been "inflated" enough or not inserted properly...

Anyways, good luck!!! It's not bad at all! A little uncomfortable going in but it definitely doesn't hurt!
Let us know how you're holding up!!
  • Good luck with your induction and thank you for asking I am having this done soon as well and was wondering the same thing.
  • I had that done as part of my induction. It makes you crampy for sure! I also had to pee with it in, ended up with some contractions and then pushed the balloon out when I pushed down to relieve the pain. The nurse told me that was totally normal since it won't come out until you're dilated. It felt really good pushing it out haha. After that they ended up breaking my water since I didn't progress much on my own after the balloon came out. It was probably in for about 2-3 hours

  • I had this done and it didn't hurt when it was put in. There was some pressure when it was being filled and it was uncomfortable. I had it in for almost 24 hours and thought it was pretty uncomfortable the whole time. I thought it made walking a bit difficult but it was possible. Good luck!

  • Ok update...balloon and cervadil in. Nothing horrendous but def crampy! My water also broke in the process so hopefully things will move along. Doc says I have some ambien and Tylenol coming my way as well :)
Hopefully I can get some sleep!
