Nursing cover or blanket?

Now that DS is more than 5 months old, we are venturing out in public more often, going to parties, etc.  Previously I hadn't been doing a lot of nursing in public mainly because we weren't taking him out much.  I am now wondering about getting a nursing cover or if I am better off just using the muslin blankets (which I have a whole bunch of).  Any suggestions?

If your baby will allow you to cover him you could try a cover like the Bebe au Lait. It has a strap around your neck and a stiff part sticks out a bit from your body that allows you to look down and see you LO while he nurses.

I am not explaining that well but google it and you will see. A will not nurse under a blanket and rarely under the cover but at least with the cover I am able to see her and she can look up at me. At this point we usually use a nursing room because they are set up nicely and when one isn't available I just find a comfortable spot without too much distraction. (She is so easily distracted)

Edit I think nursing in public gets easier the more you do it.edit

  • I'm also a fan of the nursing tank (undercover mama) and shirt on top.  I had a cover but DD didn't really tolerate it.  And then I used our A&A muslins if needed (they worked better for us than the cover).  The best thing for us was nursing in the ergo carrier - the straps hid almost everything, and I could drape a blanket or burp cloth over the side to hide side-boob if needed.

Interesting. I like this idea, since the ergo carrier is the only one he likes.  I had no luck getting him in the Ktan nor the Moby, after multiple attempts at different stages.  I wouldn't even think of trying a ring sling ;)

I have lots of those A&A blankets, and since they are so light, they might work well to cover and or drape.

  • I had a hard time with making sure the blanket wouldn't fall down and expose me. I bought the Bebe au Lait like the pp and I love it!
  • Thanks @kjsmith9 for the suggestion on undercover mama tanks.  I just looked them up & ordered some.

  • I got a bebe au lait nursing cover with my first daughter when she was about 6 weeks old and it is seriously my most used baby item! I found using a regular blanket so annoying but using nursing cover is so easy. I bought another one for my second daughter only because DD#1 actually because really attached to her cover. what I usually do now with DD#2 when I'm out is stick her in the moby and just throw the cover over my head

  • We don't use either. I bought a cover early on and found it to be such PIA and my daughter hated it so bad that we both typically ended up in tears of frustration. I also found it draws a lot more attention which was embarrassing to me early on. She doesn't want anything covering her face. And it's hard to guide my breast to her when I can't see where she even is bc she is covered (probably wouldn't be an issue now that's she is older and can guide herself but early on this was a huge issue). I nurse in public quite a bit. I simply wear my nursing tank under my regular shirt. I can't tell you how many servers at restaurants have made comments on my "sleepy" baby or how many friends have come up to touch her head and they're completely oblivious to the fact that she is nursing not sleeping! But if I wear a cover people immediately know and that's when they get awkward! So my vote is for no cover and just a good nursing tank. But that's just me!

    This!
  • Instead of buying a cover I bought these adjustable clip straps at babies r us that hold the blankets up so my LO can't pull it off, so far it has worked great.
  • Had a hard time with blankets too!
  • I wear a regular tank and T-shirt. This is usually enough to keep me covered enough. I occasionally tuck a muslin blanket into my bra strap and use to cover the top of my breast.
