EI/assessment question

How do EI or other assessments work? I know T can do loads of tricks, but if we try to show a stranger/someone she knows but hasn't seen in a while, she doesn't do them. All children are like this, so how do strangers get to do proper assessments? Are they just really good at getting kids to relax? Or do they spend a really long time with the kid? I'm just curious about this.

Re: EI/assessment question

  • I think it probably depends -- I can only really speak about EI (where they score gross motor, fine motor, speech, adaptive and social -- I think those are the categories) and outpatient PT and OT.  Each assessment was about 45 mins.  I'm not sure what you are concerned about, but with gross and fine motor it is a bit more "checklisty" -- can the kid do it well (and at what age level), do it, can't do it.  All of the therapists we met with were very engaging and good with L even when he didn't want to participate.  They would usually just move on to another task and then try to come back and re-try something.  And I think in a holistic assessment like EI probably part of it is how well the little one reacts to strangers.  Good luck!  PM me if you want.

  • Thanks. I was just curious, watching how T will "show off" for some people and not others, wondering how people get accurate assessments. Interesting.

DS1 was evaluated at 2.  He is really, really slow to warm up to new people - he still is.  He was evaluated by 2 people a Speech therapist (we were worried about speech) and behavioral person.  There was also a case worker who over saw the process.  We were there about 1.5 hours.  They went slow asking me questions first, the Speech lady started playing with him and he warmed up to her.  He wouldn't do anything the other lady asked so the speech lady did the whole test (all the areas @legalbeagle1).  The ladies who evaluated DS knew what they were doing and worked with ds to get what they needed.  Also, the couple of things he didn't do they asked me about.

Also, I prepped ds by telling him that we were going to play with my friends.  I told him how excited I was too see them and how much fun he would have playing with them.
