I know a few of you saw my post about DD1 and DD2 catching an awful stomach bug from DD1's school carnival on Saturday. At first I thought it was just a bug, although weird that they got it at the same time. Normally they pass it to one another. Then, I spoke to a few other moms yesterday and found out their kids were vomiting since Sunday night/early Monday morning like my kids. Upon chatting again later I found out that 5 teachers and 51 students were out yesterday. That count doesn't include siblings like DD2, and a few of the other moms had their older/younger children sick as well. The count ONLY as I know it right now it close to 70 people. DD1 is not ready to go back to school yet, but I decided to email the principal. I basically said, I understand that children get sick, but this was a pretty large scale and I was wondering what measures you have taken to try and clean/disinfect. I really don't want to send her back only to have the few healthy ones that showed up get it and then pass it back around. I will add that I am not a fan of this principal. A few of the moms and I have discussed how dismissive he can be and it's frustrating to feel like he's just saying what "he should" to pacify us. Anyway, I talked to another mom this morning to check on each others kids, and she said he got back with her first thing this morning. I'm not real happy and feel a bit like I'm being ignored. I know I'm sleep deprived and seriously mentally drained after the month long sickness we have had going on here, but am I overreacting? I mean, over 70 people to be throwing up after this one event is kind of ridiculous. Right? I cannot do these last 2 days again. I just can't. I don't think I'm wrong for asking him to address this and give me some reassurance that they Clorox bombed the place or something.
Re: WWJ13 do.. the carnival plague
To be completely honest I'm surprised no one has gone to the news with this! Jacksonville is a big small town and something like this would have been headline news.
I'm asking my sister (in grad school for epidemiology) at what point the school has to report it to the CDC...

@libberluru Exactly! So stupid.
@kdc2007 You did answer my question. I asked what you'd do. Lol. I've been thinking about keeping her home all week, but hadn't really decided.
LA county requires, by law, that if 85 are infected the school is required to report it or they face a fine and a misdemeanor charge.

@wasnotwas Interesting...
Ugh! So, here's the email my mom friend sent.
Hi Mr.. This is Mrs.. Both of my boys are out due to the stomach flu. My kids are not the only ones. I know of multiple parents with children who are sick with the same thing. Our kids all started Sunday night throwing up well into Monday morning. We all attended the school carnival on Saturday. I am not convinced that this is a coincidence. I know teachers were ill as well. I just want to know if the school has been disinfected and if it is safe for the kids to return when they're well.
His response
The school has been experiencing the flu bug. The carnival was very well attended and it is possible that the bug was transmitted at this event. However today, we have not had students coming to the office complaining of illness/stomach problems. I will pass along your concern
to our central office and maintenance staff. If there are any other questions or concerns, please contact me.
Ok.. is it just me or is this a blow off?

With that being said, I completely understand your concern if the facts are all of these ppl have flu like symptoms. Do they have a nurse or health office? Try calling that line. Play stupid. "I'm so concerned. Do you think it is just a flu bug? How long should I keep X home for? You poor thing. Have you been busy treating LO's?" Good luck!
@nix55 There are only about 350 kids at the school and 18-25 teachers, which includes secretary and such. And, I know because I'm friends with 2 of the teachers (husband and wife), and he had it too.
They just now posted this on their Facebook page.
1. He said the bug got passed around at the carnival, acknowledging your concern.
2. He said kids weren't still coming to the nurse sick so it's probably not still in the building.
3. He said he would talk to the maintanance staff.
He's not going to personally scrub each classroom. The maintanance people will do a good job cleaning. Also, if that many kids are out, I promise you every teacher in that school is sanitizing their rooms. I know as a parent you are concerned, but I feel like a lot of people aren't giving the school enough credit. Try to trust that they have the kids' best interest at heart (hell, they gave up their Saturday to put on a carnival) and that they are doing exactly what they need to be doing.
