  To be completely honest I'm surprised no one has gone to the news with this! Jacksonville is a big small town and something like this would have been headline news.

  I'm asking my sister (in grad school for epidemiology) at what point the school has to report it to the CDC...

  When did you send the email to him?  I'd give him 48 hours to respond.  But, yes, you should receive a response that addresses your concerns.

  I guess my issue is he usually responds right away. I sent it last night. And, truthfully I don't feel comfortable sending her back until somebody tells me that some sort of something was done. I will probably keep her home again tomorrow as she can keep food down, but still isn't really eating. I just find it weird that they don't seem to be making any sort of effort to let us parents know that they realize that something clearly happened in their building and that they are doing what they can to make sure that our children our safe. Really, it pisses me off.

  Ok my sister said they should report it to the health department. What county are you in?
  
  LA county requires, by law, that if 85 are infected the school is required to report it or they face a fine and a misdemeanor charge.

  Team not overreacting, stomach bugs are no joke and expecting information from the school about what they plan to do isn't that much to ask. I'm surprised they haven't mass-emailed.

  Ugh! So, here's the email my mom friend sent.

  Hi Mr..  This is Mrs..  Both of my boys are out due to the stomach flu.  My kids are not the only ones.  I know of multiple parents with children who are sick with the same thing.  Our kids all started Sunday night throwing up well into Monday morning.  We all attended the school carnival on Saturday. I am not convinced that this is a coincidence.  I know teachers were ill  as well.  I just want to know if the school has been disinfected and if it is safe for the kids to return when they're well.

  His response

  The school has been experiencing the flu bug. The carnival was very well attended and it is possible that the bug was transmitted at this event. However today, we have not had students coming to the office complaining of illness/stomach problems. I will pass along your concern
  to our central office and maintenance staff. If there are any other questions or concerns, please contact me.
  

  Ok.. is it just me or is this a blow off?

  That's a super blow off @tiffletons518 I would be curious to know the absentee list for yesterday to see just how many were really out. But this investigation will be what the health department will do. It's up to them to determine if it's the "flu bug" and it's important that it gets reported for their record keeping! I'd call the health department for sure, because it's obvious this dope isn't going to do anything about it.

  Do you know that 50-70 kids and 5 teachers are out due to vomitting? The reason I ask is because I am a teacher in a school of 800+ and we typically have an average of 40-50 kids out daily. We also have an average of 2-3 teachers out. Not to mention is was a "holiday" Monday. I know our attendance rate for teachers is a bit sketchy on these days.
  
  With that being said, I completely understand your concern if the facts are all of these ppl have flu like symptoms. Do they have a nurse or health office? Try calling that line. Play stupid. "I'm so concerned. Do you think it is just a flu bug? How long should I keep X home for? You poor thing. Have you been busy treating LO's?" Good luck!

  @nix55 There are only about 350 kids at the school and 18-25 teachers, which includes secretary and such. And, I know because I'm friends with 2 of the teachers (husband and wife), and he had it too.

  Grogan parents, students, teachers & staff: Please remind our students to continue washing their hands, cover their coughs and sneezes and to stay home if they are not feeling well. We are aware that there is something going around and we are doing our due diligence to disinfect the building and reminding our students how to prevent the spread of these germs. Thank you

  Wow, that is definitely cause for concern. Have your teacher friends asked if any action was going to be taken? You can try to call the district office, too. They will probably direct you back to the principal, but at least you'd get the word out.

  You mentioned that it was a carnival.  Could it have been food poisoning? Or is it pretty clear that the symptoms were flu symptoms?  Just wondering.  And I think that you are not being petty at all.  Flu (or food poisoning) takes its toll on everyone and I would definitely want to know if it was going around in such force.

  @halfdozenmama We know it wasn't food poisoning because a few people I know didn't eat there. I just got a call from the school via mass prerecorded message saying exactly what the Facebook page said. To me it still feels like they're saying, "Kids get sick. It happens. Cover your mouth and wash your hands". They did say they're trying to disinfect the building. I guess I was just hoping for them to say that they recognize how big this was and be more reassuring.

  As a teacher, I feel like the principal's response was actually just fine.
  1. He said the bug got passed around at the carnival, acknowledging your concern.
  2. He said kids weren't still coming to the nurse sick so it's probably not still in the building.
  3. He said he would talk to the maintanance staff.
  He's not going to personally scrub each classroom. The maintanance people will do a good job cleaning. Also, if that many kids are out, I promise you every teacher in that school is sanitizing their rooms. I know as a parent you are concerned, but I feel like a lot of people aren't giving the school enough credit. Try to trust that they have the kids' best interest at heart (hell, they gave up their Saturday to put on a carnival) and that they are doing exactly what they need to be doing.

  meh, I understand your perspective, but at some point it's a public health issue. It's not about who's best interest is at heart, I'm sure he doesn't mean any ill will towards the family du tiffleton, but the rapid and widespread nature of the disease is a cause for concern.

  @wasnotwas I totally agree, but he said he reported it to the Central Office.  They are the ones who would be responsible for any reporting to higher authorities that needed to happen I think.  I just think that it's probably being handled appropriately, even if they aren't telling every parent every step that they are taking.

  I agree with @cricket81 I think he handled it the to the extent of his power in the situation. Sending out an all call is definitely addressing that they know there is a problem and they are working on a solution. I'm also a teacher and you would not believe how quickly illness spreads in a school. What do you think higher powers would do differently?! I think the only solution here is to admit there is an issue and due a massive cleaning. end. of. story.

  Maybe I'm not reading this correctly but this sounds like more than just a regular bug to have spread that quickly and be that contagious. After reading Hot Zone though I think everything is Ebola so I may be a little jumpy in that regard. Either way I wouldn't be sending my kids to school. The response from the principal though is probably the extent of what you can say or do in this situation. You have to be so careful about wording and taking responsibility because of how quickly things turn into a legal issue.

  Well, the plague spread to me so I've been MIA. Wednesday a new group of kids were missing, and the same today. Basically it's making its way through. I plan to keep DD1 home all week. I get what you are saying about him handling it the best he could. And, of course like you said I'm sure the teachers were doing their best to clean the crap out of the classrooms. No, I don't expect a personal call to every parent giving them a play by play. My kid is in their care for more hours a day than mine, and I want to feel reassured that they understand the bigness of this and that they are doing whatever they can. Maybe that is too much to ask, which sucks.  I mean, whatever. The girls are finally better, I am on the upswing getting over it, and so far that seems to be it. Thank God.
