8 mo old/Guests' Perscrip Pill

Let me start off by saying my family takes a lot of perscription pills. My problem is my 8 mo old found a pill on our guest room floor this morning. After describing it to my mom, she realized it was her sleeping pill. I asked my family to keep their pills in their vehicles when they visit. My sister said this is my husband and I's responsibility and we are to blame. I vacuumed twice since my mother visited and missed the pill that was the same color as our carpet.

Is it fair to ask people to keep perscriptions in their cars? My sister said hers need to be between 50 and 70 degrees so they won't be in their car. I am scared to death of this because it could've ended very badly if I didn't catch my son with this and went on with my day. A life or death case seems to me that I can ask for pills to stay outside. Advice or similar situations?

  • 1.  Prescription.

    2.  Your sister is a moron.

    3.  You should ask your guests to keep any prescription medications away from your child while they are visiting, but I'm not sure they need to be in a car.  Perhaps high on a chest-of-drawers or in a closet.

How often does your family visit?

  • Can she leave the sleeping pill at home? I don't see why she needs to bring them on her persons at all if she's traveling. That doesn't seem safe period.

  • I guess I would wonder how it got on the floor in the first place? I don't see why they can't handle keeping them in their purse and their purse somewhere where the baby can't get it

I keep my prescription narcotics in our safe. You can get a simple lock box from any store for around $15. I wouldn't want to keep my meds in my car. It shouldn't be a big deal to keep pills away from an 8 month old. Guests should be diligent about not leaving them out or dropping them on the floor. SMH

  • Yes just one pill dropped... that I've noticed.

  • Being in the car isn't good for the pills. Your sister is right about that. But she's a moron for blaming you. The person taking the pills shouldn't be careless and dropping and losing them. I might make a rule that all pills be kept in a certain bathroom cupboard.

  • I agree the meds weren't noticed they were dropped. My mom said it must've fell out when she was taking her daily doses. One of the three visits at least every 2-3 months.
  • I agree locking the pills up but the issue was one wasn't noticed it was dropped.

  • She could leave 'That' pill at home, but there are many others to the one left at home.

  • I told them they need to leave them outside of our house, I offered to let them use our garage fridge, stay in a hotel or only make a day trip where they pills aren't needed to accompany them.
  • I agree, pills aren't allowed on the ground and they are in baby safe containers. But when the pills were taken one was dropped un-noticed. Either way I think they will hide and bring them in unless I demand the pill or the guests stay elsewhere.
  • My family came to visit for x-mas. My 2 yr old got into my sisters Wellbutrin and Levothyrozine. We could confirm or she did or did not actually eat any pills. My daughter had to spend 24 hours in the hospital hooked up to machines. IF she had eaten the Wellbutrin the consequence can be deadly seizures after just one pill swallowed.

That hospital stay cost over $5000. Thankfully she never ended up having any symptoms.

We now question everyone about possible pills and offer them somewhere safe to keep them.

  • There are locking daily dose pill dispensers, but they can be pricey. You could put a cheap plastic 7 day dose box in a lock box. There are a lot of options out there. Buy it to keep at your home so it can't be forgotten. Have your mom separate her pills and put the bottles away until she leaves. She will notice if one drops because she will be short a pill.

  • I'd ask them to bring exactly what they need in one of those things with the separate compartment for each day. Then keep them in a certain, baby-safe spot. If they have just what they need, they're more likely to notice and recover a dropped pill.

Agree. Can you ask them to put them in a med cabinet or caboodle case? You can get them for cheap. Med in the caboodle case & up in a closet.

If someone has to take meds 3-5 times a day then it might be terribly inconvenient to go out to the car each time? Then again if they can't keep watch on them then that's a problem.

  • If you think they'll smuggle the pills in , you need to focus on how to prevent a pill from being dropped unnoticed. There have been good suggestions in here.

  • Thank you all for the good suggestions!
  • Ok so yeah, the issue is the dropping, not that they're in the house.  I would tell them that A) pills need to be in a case up high (in a cabinet or closet shelf) in child proof containers and B) those containers can't be opened unless in the bathroom over the sink so that if one DOES fall, down the drain it goes.  No more tossing a pill into the hand from the container in the middle of a carpeted room.

Also, team your sister is an idiot.

I don't know, it just seems like being careful here isn't that difficult.  Sit down at a table when taking your pills, and pay attention.  If someone is shaky, you can give them a hand.

One more on Team Your Sister Is an Idiot.

It's not fair to ask people to keep their Rx medication in a car (especially given the temperature fluctuations at any given point in the seasons and the temp meds are supposed to be stored at) but the person taking the medication does need to be responsible about it when in a home with a small child.

So if they can't abide by proper storage (in a high cabinet or shelf or lockbox that you provide), and they can't safely handle their medication (say, over the bathroom sink in case one is dropped), then they can either stay at a hotel and store / take their meds there or not visit until they can be safe about it. That would piss me off to no end if a relative where so nonchalant about dropped medication that a small child could easily find and ingest.

This, for me, is the main issue.  It's not like any of us are above a mistake - even a potentially deadly one.  But anyone who doesn't recognize it for what it is and who doesn't become hell bent on finding a way to make sure they never do it again is not someone who can be trusted.

  • When my kids were really little I used small "pill safes" that I got at CVS.  It has a combination lock and will fit four pill bottles...maybe buy a few of those and give to guests to use?  Of course that won't help when they drop a pill on the floor and don't pick it up :(
