Single Parents

Advice please???

I've pretty much bought every thing baby needs already and plus I'm having a baby shower. All I really want to but now is a swing and a couple more boxes of diapers but everything else I have. I really want to buy a laptop for school. I kind of feel guilty for wanting to spend 300 some odd dollars on myself. I haven't really bought myself anything for myself since I found out I was pregnant( not even clothes). I feel like that money should be put towards baby. What do you think I should do? Does this make me a bad parent?

Re: Advice please???

  • No you are not a bad parent.  It's hard when baby gets everything.  That won't stop for a long long time.  If you need a laptop for school then buy one.  I just had to get one for myself and found some really good deals at Walmart.  I ordered one online and had it within 2 weeks. Yes, I felt a little guilty about it since that money came out of our emergency fund. Even with putting another person's needs before your own you still have to take care of you, too.

  • I will tell you one thing that my therapist told me when I had PPD...because I was very much in the "I can't do anything for myself because I have a child" realm.

You know how when you're on a plane they tell you if the oxygen masks come down that you should secure yours first before helping your child? That applies to everything. A stressed out, frazzled, exhausted mom who has deprived herself of everything that makes her happy is not going to be as strong of a support for her child. By taking care of YOU you're also taking care of your child. Babies and children pick up on when mom is stressed/anxious/angry/tired and it affects them as well.

I say get that laptop, and like @beccaga16 said, get yourself a mani/pedi if you need it to unwind!

  • My son barely used his swing (and got a preowned Mamaroo that was still like $150).  It was a complete waste of money.  He just didn't like it.  I found that a lot of stuff I bought him before he was born didn't get much use and I had a much better sense of what I really needed after I had him.  I say get a swing in good condition at a consignment store if you can and get yourself a laptop.  You will get a lot more use out of the laptop (hopefully several years) and a swing will only be used a few months at most.

  • As a mother of 3 and currently pregnant you HAVE to pamper yourself. But a computer for school is almost a must these days. Definitely not a bad parent lol
