Superficial question of the day - how to style hair for labor

I'm serious.  So I have long and unruly hair.  If you look at it cross eyed it gets snarled.  Most of the time I wear it in a bun and did so with my first birth.  But it's hard to lay down with a bun in, and it falls out, and it looked like total crap in photos.  So while I generally don't photograph well to begin with, you can imagine the photos my husband took after 2 days of labor and a c-section, holy cats, it was bad.  Planning a much different labor this time and I plan to at least look like I showered prior to getting hit by a bus.  I'm thinking braid.  But pinterest is failing me and I feel like there should be some awesome leave in treatments a person could put in their hair prior to braiding to keep it a little less crazy.

And I did just order two maternity/nursing gowns to wear in the hospital rather than the old granny styled floral hospital number.

These are real concerns, I tell ya!

  • Bun at the very top of my head is how I went. I moved it down lower after the birth was over.

Hehe if I put a sock bun in my hair the bun would be bigger than my head.  I have a lot of hair.  My regular bun without a sock is as big as my hand.
  • Oh I do not know. I am having a RCS, so at least this time I will not look like a total hell and that is hoping I do not go into labor before hand. I went through 2 days of labor too and it was not even on my mind. I am bringing waterless shampoo with me this time.

I've wanted to try this. I will have a RCS also and the only way they motivated me to get out of bed in that much pain was that I wanted to shower-NOW!

  • I have thought about this too. I have a horrible cold right now and I am slugging around the house and I had an awesome high messy bun going last night and this morning, but I don't know how well it would stay. My hair is naturally wavy and even if I straighten it before, all of the sweat is going to give me some awful frizz...especially in August.

I think I am going to go with a high ponytail, but have waterless shampoo on hand for when it gets sweaty/frizzy.

  • My first thought when I read the title was "ponytail!"  Then I read about your hair description.  Sorry I don't have any advice!

I just wanted to add that close to my due date I do make sure I was my hair often.  I usually only wash it once every few days, so I don't want to be caught with it not washed for a week when I go into labor.  Oh, I also make sure my legs/bikini line are shaved daily or so near that time.

Yeah I'm thinking of a braid and possibly braid it wet with some product.  Either that or I'll convince my husband I need a doula and hire one who can braid for me ;)

I contemplated this with the birth of my ds. I used to go to music festivals that would last three four days so I would get my hair professionally braided at a salon. Fishtail/ double french whatever I was in the mood for. If my ds didn't come four weeks early I would of gotten it done for his birth. I am having a rcs so I will definitely have it done for 2.0s birth.

  • Shave it!  Jk, I promise you won't care when the time comes.  Honestly, I photoshopped my frizzies out of my post-birth photos and called it a day ;)

High messy bun is my plan! I entirely expect to look like crap the whole time.

Ever think of chopping your hair? ;;)

First rule of "girlfriend's guide to pregnancy" is to never cut your hair while pregnant.

And on that note, I had intentions of showering and French braiding my hair when I went into labour, but I progressed so fast a shower was like a a fairy tale. I don't even remember how my hair was because I was wheeled into the OR so fast for an emergency c-section, I barely had time to blink. And more than likely I will be in the same position this time. No time to think, just act and get my arse to the hospital.

  • I had short hair and an induction last time. I got up early to fix my hair and do my makeup. Mock me if you will, but I look great in pictures. :)

This time I'm hoping for natural labor and I have long crazy hair (frizzy/wavy). I'm thinking braid from wet hair, maybe with some antifrizz product in there if I think of it.

  • I don't care how my hair looks during labor. But before we allow guests in which won't be long after birth I will request a mirror and my hair products and probably make up too. I know people will want pictures of me BF and baby and I'm sure they will be plastered everywhere on Facebook, Instagram, etc. I do not want to look like I just went through labor lol

My lady bits I take care of well. I cannot stand any hair. Drives me nuts, especially in the hot summer. If I cannot see to shave I'll be getting a wax kit and my sister will most likely get the honors. Sorry not sorry sister!
  • I had short hair (above my shoulders) so I brought a couple stretchy headbands to the hospital with me.  I also looked like hell after 2 days of an induction and then a c-section.  The nurses kept telling me "after the shift change" when I asked about a shower and I swear to God I will take out my catheter myself and army crawl to the shower if I have to this time.

  • I am thinking I will go with a French braid. I think they still look cute when they're a little messy.

I tried out a braid this weekend while wet with some product.  Look-wise it was pretty decent but I still get a nasty knot at the nape of my neck, though it wasn't too horrible to comb out. That's part of the planning - how long does it take to comb out cuz I'm sure I won't want to be standing around in front of a mirror for hours trying to rip knots out of my hair.

Maybe a french braid would work better as far as knots.  I guess I have a few months to learn how to do one or teach the husband ;)  And every time I cut it I hate it so I gave up.  I'm sure someday I'll have to cut it for one reason or another - today is not that day ;)

Just ordered a new trimmer myself, had the hubby do it last pregnancy.
  • I told DH if he even THOUGHT about taking a picture of me post-labor, I'd beat the shit out of him.  Sorry if that's not helpful :)

  • I just know that last time I had a ponytail during labor and birth with my son (I think at some point it must have just come out completely?) but my hair was like a massive matt afterwards. I think I'll probably try jumping in the shower when I know I'm in labor to get it wet and try the braiding idea or a really high bun. Or I'll just chop off all my hair lol.

  • I refuse to be unruly down there. I've got a girl for that. She is amazing and not terribly pricey.
Seriously ladies-- look into a waxer. You won't be sorry.

2nd this! I mostly shave but when I can afford the extra ($60) a month or so I totally get waxed. But I still can't explain why I'll wax my vagina any day but I'm terrified that waxing my eyebrows will hurt. Lol I don't think the bikini wax hurt at all anyways but some reason eyebrows seem more sensitive to me. I'm weird
  • I'm probably going to go for the french braids this time.  I was induced last time so had time to get ready.  I did a pony and it didn't do crap to keep my hair out of my face.  But I had cut it a few weeks earlier and it was too short to pony.  This time its long and I'm not cutting until AFTER birth.
