Cut back on pumping at work?

I have a 6 month old and I work full time 7-4. I am tossing around the idea of cutting out 1 of my three pumping sessions at work. I have a large freezer stash (prob 400 oz) which make me feel more comfortable to consider. I have always had an oversupply that I never really worked on decreasing. I currently pump every 3 hours at work and end up with an extra 6-10 oz each day. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks!!

Re: Cut back on pumping at work?

  • i didn't really have an oversupply, but i cut back from 3 pumping sessions a day to 2 when my DS was around 7 months. at this point he had been started on solids for about a month and was actually consuming at least a little, and i was also sending solids to daycare along with pumped BM. i had a decent amount in the freezer (maybe 150 oz), but with the 2 pumps i was generally able to get what he needed for the next day.

even if you're not starting on solids soon, it sounds like you have plenty extra in the freezer to last you a while if your LO ends up needing more than you can pump each day.

i also have to add that cutting from 3 sessions to 2 was a big relief. i actually felt like i was getting something done at work besides just pumping. :P

  • Cutting out 1 feeding gradually while he's growing is a good idea. I think you have enough supply so pumping often will make your body think that you still need to produce that same amount. your As what PP mentioned, your LO will start eating solids so you will have to decrease feedings as it happens.
  • I was in this situation when my DD was 5 months old.  I dropped a pump and only pumped every 4-5 hours at work.  My supply never decreased, I pumped just as much with fewer sessions until 10 months.  At 10 months I dropped to one pump at work and am now using up that giant freezer stash.  In two weeks I will stop pumping at work and keep using my frozen milk to get her to a year (as well as continuing to nurse morning and night).

  • Thank you everyone for the testimonials! I'll prob test the waters next week or so.
  • I work 12+ hour days and I dropped a pump due to oversupply. I make sure I'm empty before I leave and pump twice at work. I still have a little extra to freeze. My LO normally eats from one side per feeding. So punping both sides every 5-6 hours made sense. The minute I don't make enough for the next day at DC I will add back in the 3rd pump.
