But leggings aren't pants ...

An Indiana middle school bans leggings and yoga pants, lol: https://salisbury.patch.com/groups/trending-in-america/p/school-bans-leggings-and-yoga-pants--too-distracting-for-boys

If the comments are to be believed, they didn't technically "ban" them, but are demanding tops be long enough to cover the bum.

Re: But leggings aren't pants ...

  • I wish the world would ban leggings worn as pants (worn as tights, accessories, or loungewear at home: acceptable).  So despite any misogynist leanings of this decision, I'm forced to support it 100%.

  • I'm trying to teach my SD that her shirts should cover her bum as a general rule, glad they are encouraging this at schools! I'm also a huge fan of dress code in school, so there is that.

  • I agree with the premise of requiring kids to wear appropriate clothing to school and setting a standard, similar to what a workplace would set, so that kids understand that everything has its place and that leggings or yoga pants may be appropriate in other places, but just as they are not appropriate for work, they are not appropriate for school.  I'm not even sure that I would include the covering the butt thing because that complicates it.  The ban is clear and simple.

However, I disagree with an statement that it is necessary to ban them because they are a distraction for boys or anything that implies that the boys should not be able to control their eyes or their behavior.  I hope that this same school has banned the boys clothes with the underwear showing, etc. as the writer points out.

Dress codes are fine as long as they support a learning environment for all students where they can feel comfortable and focus on education.

  • 1,000 times AMEN.  Leggings are not pants.

And for once, I'm with @Holly_1007.  I wholeheartedly believe that schools should have dress codes. Not uniforms necessarily, but a dress code.  You have them at work, & at bars and clubs, you have rules about what's acceptable to wear or not wear in stores or at sporting events, why can't you have them in schools?

The whole "it's distracting to boys" thing is utterly ridiculous and I hate that it's the reason for a decision to be made.

Piggyback question: at what age do leggings stop being pants and/or require the bottom coverage rule?

Obviously an 18 month old rocking leggings and a normal length tee shirt is very different than a 12 year old, but it made me wonder.

Really I'd say by middle school.  Once boys and girls start getting interested in each other and it can somehow be seen as sexual?

My SILs are in high school and are very petite girls. They look cute in leggings with shorter than butt cover length tops. It's a style, let them go with it. No showing skin, nothing see through, length requirements... but I don't care about banning leggings. I always think about my skimpy cheer outfits when school dress codes come up. Skirts had to be longer than fingertips, except every Friday lol.

  • I was just telling DH that my wardrobe makes me look old or unfashionable because all you see on my college campus is leggings as pants with sneakers and an average length shirt. And that's not my style. It's gross, I don't care what size or age you are see through leggings shouldn't be worn without proper coverage. (Toddlers/babies/ young kids are an exception to the rule).

    Stop hating on leggings!
I wore jeans in HS that were sexier than my sexiest yoga pants, crazy, I know.

my SD is 7.5, about 6 months ago she REALLY started showing an interest in what she was wearing. Don't get me wrong she had preferences before, but the past 6 months or so have been the same outfits on repeat, completely avoiding certain clothing articles in her closet. That was when I tried to encourage her to wear her regular length tees with jeans, or put a skirt over the leggings. I bough her a few tunic sweaters to wear with her leggings. It's a work in progress, as is everything in a blended family.

  • ... but just to be clear, leggings ARE pants for toddlers, right? Cause DD doesn't have enough of a butt to hold up real pants...
  • Its all diaper for now! So no camel toe lol

My school had a dress code (high school anyway, can't really remember for middle). Ours involved things like, shorts and skirts had to be a certain length, no spaghetti-strap tops, no obscene writing on shirts, etc. I agree with the need for a dress code, but like many have said, I think it's total BS that the boys being distracted even got brought up.

Maybe they'll ban these too, since I'm so distracted by them I can't possibly work anymore this morning.

See, I don't call those leggings. I call those footless tights. Leggings aren't see through, they are a thicker material. If I was in high school now, I would totally rock the leggings with tshirt style. Especially the fun leather leggings.
