NBR charged to transfer medical records?!

This may be totally normal so please pardon my ignorance. After a few mishaps during and after my pregnancy I have decided to leave my obgyn of 8 years and move over to a new practice. I found a new dr that came highly reccommended and i went to see and loved so im happy. I just called to have my records moved over and my doctor told me it will cost $1 per page. Is this normal?! I have no idea how many pages my record is....i have been seeing him for 8 years and have had a baby through that practice..it could bd 100 pages for all i know! I am just annoyed--it feels like a scam. these are MY medical records!

  • I've never had to pay for my t records other than school records!

  • Can you go by and physically pick up the records and then fax them yourself? I saw an OB one time (just one! though that included an A/S) and they wanted to charge $25 for a records transfer to my new doctor. I can't remember exactly how I circumvented the cost, but I think it involved a little more effort on my end than leaving it in their hands.

They are a large practice with a lot of bureaucracy, and it was a pain in the ass to hound down the right people. I was really glad I didn't stay with them.

  • i did offer to pick them up! i asked what protocol was and they were like whatever you want. So I said I can come pick them up if thats easier. She didnt comment. Regardless they charge you. Dumb in my opinion!
  • That's not cool at all. I would definitely try to negotiate with them, especially if you have more than 25 pages (which I am almost 100% certain you will). Freaking $1 per page. SMDH.

  • I have medical records in 10 states in probably 50 different practices and hospitals and I've never paid for record transfers. Try having your new practice request the records.

  • In Maryland, we can't charge practice to practice, but it costs $0.75 a page if for personal use. We generally cut it off at $25.00.
  • When I moved while 20 weeks prego with DD got a copy of my records and I swear it was a scam! It was $110 dollars! A dollar a page for 110 pages of stuff that could have been on maybe 10 pages at the max, but the computer system at U Penn records the results of every test like 5 times in a row using up multiple pages! They outsource the printing of records and no one seemed to care that or be able to explain to me how 4 doctor visits could equal 100 pages. My advice ask how many pages before you agree.
