Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Nap time/bed time length?

We just switched Grace to 1 nap/day last week.  She is 16 months.  Started at 11:30 and have moved it slowly back to 12:30p.  She would sleep 1.5-2 hours ('til 2 or 2:30), then we do bath time, play time, and her nightly movie/bottle, all beginning at 7.  She is put down at 8.  The first 2 mornings she slept 'til 7, but woke at 5:35 yesterday super grouchy most of the day and at 6:00 today.  We tried putting her down now at 12:00 bc DH thinks being away 2:30-8 doesn't make her tired enough.  8-6 is OK with me if that's normal...just wondering.
Any ideas?  Or just stick with the noon a couple days and see what happens?

Re: Nap time/bed time length?

  • With DD#1 when I went down to one nap my goal was a 1pm nap at 13 months. I had to slowly move it from 1130 to 1230 to finally get to a 1pm nap.  She woke around 7am and went to bed at 7pm back then. Now at almost 3yrs old she still naps from about 1pm-3pm. She goes to bed at 8pm and wakes up between 7-8am.

DD#2 just went down to one nap.  She goes down from about 1pm-3pm for a nap. She sleeps about 730p to 7-8 am.

You said you just dropped to 1 nap...it took us a few weeks with DD#1 to get her on a 1pm nap.  It is still a working progress getting DD#2 to nap at 1pm.  It takes time.

  • I'm not sure about the naps because L is still on 2 but is trying to switch himself to one nap, maybe. We are kind of in nap limbo at the moment. I will say he used to sleep 8pm to 6am, and then when I cut out nap 3 (late afternoon nap and I cut it out around 11 months) I started to put him to bed at 6pm and now he sleeps until 730am.
His current night time is 630 or 7pm bedtime to 730am. Earlier bedtime made a huge difference.

  • DS is 19 months and an early napper. He is usually awake for 4 - 5 hours and needs a nap. So usually by 11am. Naps for about 2 hours. Goes to bed around 7:30pm.

    This is us exactly.

  • At DC DS takes a nap at 11:30 for about 2 hours. If he's up early on the weekends, I'll try to keep that schedule, but if he sleeps late it's more like 12:30.

Bedtime has been gradually moving back and is almost 8 now, which is the absolute latest I'll go for the foreseeable future. the whole bath/book, etc. routine takes 30-45 minutes.
  • My 20 month old just went through a week of early wake ups (5:30/6 when her normal wake up is 7/7:30) with no discernible cause. Kids are weird and sometimes they just throw in some crazy sleep patterns :) When my kid naps its usually noon-1:30 and then she goes to bed around 7:30/8 and sleeps 11.5-12 hours.

  • DD is 16 months old..we struggle with naps. She's at daycare 5 days a week and I try and mimic their schedule. They started 1/day around 13 months. Sometimes she's great and gives them 1.5-2 hrs. Other times its 40 minutes. On weekends I see the same..one day a great nap, the other not so much. She's so consistent with bedtime..7pm to 630 -7am that I'm sort of turning a blind eye to the inconsistent napping
