croup

I put DS to bed at 730 last night, happy/ healthy/his normal silly self until lights out... at 1030 he let out a wail followed by a raspy attempt to catch his breath. ..I knew that croup sounds like that but because he hadnt been the least bit sick I was also afraid that he had swallowed something that was blocking his airway ( not that there is anything in his crib to swallow, but your brain does crazy things when you're worried).. Long story shortish, we went to the ER and they said its croup... They gave him a shot of steroids and since then he's had no problem catching his breath but just has an ocxassional cough..has anyone ever dealt with croup coming on this fast? I believe the doctors and I think that's truly what's wrong but I had no idea it could come on that quivkly... Today he is showing no signs that we spent a good chunk of our evening in the ER... Back to his wild "all boy" self...

Re: croup

  • I'm a Peds ER nurse, so I see this a ton.... A TON.  Sounds like classic croup.  It is very scary for parents that aren't familiar with it. Sometimes kids start with mild cold symptoms and fever, and sometimes it just comes out of nowhere.  If his barky cough gets worse, try sitting in the bathroom with a hot shower running so it steams up.  That will help.  Good luck momma!

  • Yeah, we're croup-prone and it does come on really fast. It was terrifying! We had the exact same trip to the ER a few months ago!  Were the ER staff all "yeah, you're the gazillionthz person who's been here for croup" like they were for us?

Now we are using a cool-air humidifier when she starts to develop a cough, and that seems to be helping.  If you live where it's cold, they recommend bringing baby outside for a few minutes to help shrink the swelling of the esophagus (or stand in front of the open fridge).
