Down to one nap?

Are most babies down to one nap now or still taking two? In the past week, Ainsley has been taking her late morning nap, but fighting her late afternoon nap hard. Today she sat in her crib for forty-five minutes, not crying but just doing her tired whine. I went in a few times to lay her back down and tell her it is time to go to sleep, but she never did. I am thinking it may be time to go to one nap, but I wish she would take it a bit later. She can barely make it to 11:00 am, and that makes for a very long rest of the day. How could you tell when your LO was ready to go to one nap?

Re: Down to one nap?

  • I thought LO was transitioning to one but I just think he was going through a rough patch between teething and a cold and language, he's saying a lot more. We started laying him down at 2 and that worked for a few days and now were back to 10 am and 4 pm naps with bedtime around 8. There only like an hour each though

  • I follow each of my children's leads. With my first it was 17 months, second 12 months and third 13 months. My youngest I knew was ready because although she went down easy in the morning she fought hard for the afternoon nap then could barely make it until 6:30 pm! For her, I just did a bit of quite time during what would have been the start of her morning nap- we read a ton of books for @20 minutes then we'd have a dance party. Lunch is at 11:15-11:30 & her nap is at 1pm. She can now stay up until 7:30 for bedtime. With my other child, I weaned them from the morning nap by shortening it from 1 hour to a half hour then cut it out.

  • Milla takes one. She wakes up between 7-8 and goes to sleep between 11-1. She will sleep 1.2-3 hours. It depends on if she got up at 7 or woke up a lot at night. She averages 14 hours total in 24 hours.

  • DS is down to one nap a day. Wakes up at 6/6:30 & is up until 11-12 then takes a solid 2-3hr nap & is good until bedtime at 7p. There are some days when he will get really snuggly for 20 minutes or so & will cuddle in my lap with his blankie if he's tired and needs a quick re-charge

  • We are down to one approximately 2 hour nap.

  • DD moved to 1 nap a day at 13 months when she switched from the infant room to the one year old room at daycare. She still napped twice on weekends until closer to 14.5 months... I don't think she was ready to go to one nap when she switched rooms, but she adjusted. Now she wakes around 6 on weekdays, 7 on weekends... Naps for 2-3 hours after lunch, and goes to bed around 7pm.
  • DD moved to one nap because we started daycare 2 weeks ago. She wakes up around 630-7am goes down for a 2 hour nap at 1230 and goes to sleep at 7pm.

If she needs it, I still let her do 2 naps. If it were up to me, she would nap earlier like 1130 am but she adjusted fine pretty fast considering she used to have her first nap at 9am.

What I noticed is that she used to only nap for 1-1/2 hour but within a week went down for 2 hours once it was only 1 naptime. Also, we had to move bed time up by an hour but that was slowly getting later with 2 naps. I think if your lo is staying up later then the are ready to switch to 1 nap.

  • Thanks ladies! Maybe today I will see if I can get her to stay up a little later for her first nap, and skip the later one. She went to bed at 8 last night without the second nap. Her bedtime is normally about 8:30.
  • DD has consistently been at one 2 - 3 hour nap a day for about a month. She transitioned with a short little evening nap and I loved that, but it's gone now.

  • LO decided not long after his birthday that he was down to one nap a day. He wakes up around 8:30, goes down between 11:30-12:20, sleeps for 2-4 hours and is down for the night around 7:30.
    He likes his sleep.
  • DD2 could switch to one nap a day right now but that would mean one longer nap earlier in the day at like 12:00. This would be really inconvenient with DD1's schedule (she naps at 2:00) and our other activities like church and ballet.

I think I am going to hold off for a little bit until she is able to make it till 2:00. DD1 is also going to start preschool in fall and I can't have DD2 taking a nap at like 12 or even 1:00, because DD1 won't get done till 12:30 and then they will still have to have lunch.

  • @bmerr: CONGRATULATIONS!! Did you post your birth announcement/story?? How is life w/ two lil guys treating you?

I feel like mine are trying to transition to one nap, as recently either the morning or afternoon nap has been more of a quiet playtime session. It's been confusing as heck, b/c the boys will act sleepy a good couple hours after they wake up (grab their blankets, suck their thumbs, say "Night night" and walk to the stairs....seems like a pretty clear sign!) and then just play for 45 minutes until I come and get them....then they're a cranky mess until I lay them back down an hour or two later, at which point they go right down and sleep at least 2 hours. But now this morning they had a good nap and now they're out again....so who knows?
