Blood in Stool (long)

Rory was seen yesterday at the pedi for black tarry like sometimes coffee ground always really hard stool and after bringing a diaper in with me we found out that the baby has blood in his stool. He was tested for anemia and lead posioning there and both tests came back negative.
The pedi said he believes it's most likely an allergy either milk or wheat and to stop all dairy and switch over to soy as we wait to see a pedi gastro specialist but my question is how long should we wait because while his pedi thinks it's an allergy he also said it could be something much more serious because you don't bleed internally for nothing.
Sorry I rambled on I'm just kinda freaking out a little right now. TIA

That's scary!!  Please keep us posted and I hope he starts to do better by eliminating the dairy and wheat.

Just a thought, did they check him for an ulcer?

  • We didn't get quite to that stage, but we had a lot of upper GI problems with dairy (like, TONS of throwing up, what I imagine was an upset stomach, etc).  Isa's been off dairy since ~9 months and it's helped a ton.  We did the Enfamil Next Step Soy for a while to make sure that she was getting everything, but have since switched to coconut milk (which has a ton of calcium and other vitamins) and an otherwise balanced diet.  It's far from perfect since we still rely on baby food pouches to get enough veggies and protein some days, but it's mostly REALLY helped.  We went from spitting up multiple times a day to hardly ever.  After it got out of her system, I screwed up and gave her some dairy-based formula by mistake and it really showed the difference -- She was noticably in pain (and did I feel horrible!) and miserable for a few days.  I'm still hoping that she'll grow out of it eventually, but at least she feels better in the mean time.

Good luck - I hope that it works out well for you too.

  • Well he is now running a 103 fever so I called the pedi when he was at 101 and the pedi said that if he has diarrhea , a bloody diaper , stops peeing or his temp hits 103.5 then to take him to the er. Well I just changed him and he was barely wet after a few hours and his temp is 102.7 after tylonal, he's napping now but I think when he wakes if nothing has changed then were taking him to the hospital

  • Aww I hope Rory gets better quickly, I would take him to the er with all those symptoms. It never hurts just to get him checked and make sure it's nothing serious. Feel better little guy!

  • We are sitting in the ER going on six hours, they still don't know what's wrong with him. He was very dehydrated but that's about it so far

  • They just sent us home basically as of now he was severely dehydrated poor baby went through two bags of fluids. He also had anal fissures which is causing some of the blood the rest they think is from a stool blockage in his bowels which they gave us medicine for to hopefully unblock. The fever is most likely a viral infection but the blood cultures should come back by Thursday as for the cause they still think it's some sort of allergy so when we go to the pedi gastro specialist we should find out. We are also supposed to go to the pedi tomorrow

  • I'm just frustrated though because it seems like they are only treating symptoms and not finding out what's actually wrong with him. So here I am at home with a baby who won't sleep and is hurting

  • They always do that. Their main purpose is to stabilize. Were they in contact with the pedi gi? Don't hesitate to go back if he's still really sick. I've been to the ED 3 times in 48 hours with Milla. The first time they hydrated her and said was just a virus, the second they talked to a specialist and he said to check xyz, then they found the severe uti. The 3rd was because she turned septic.
Go back if you feel it's necessary.
