Singleton after twins - birthing question

I am 30 weeks pregnant and my twins will be 2.5 years old when this next baby is born. I am scheduled for a repeat c-section, but am getting more and more concerned about taking care of 2 toddlers while recovering and a new baby. I an now thinking about a VBAC. Can anyone who was in a similar situation share their c-section recovery experience with me. Were you constantly dependent on help with the twins? How was the lifting restriction? Anyone with VBAC experience? Should I push for that if I can?

Re: Singleton after twins - birthing question

  • Having opportunities is nice so I did 'try' for a VBAC. Because my first pregnancy was c-section due to positioning, I wanted to see what my body would do which ended up being a whole lot of nothing. I held out at 41+ w and scheduled a cs for 42w but I was not progressing and was experiencing some issues that brought me the hospital. After we checked to see baby was okay--I had enough scare and decided that holding out an extra couple days wasn't worth it. Honestly, both my CS's were great. I took an extra strength ibuprofen once or twice the first few days to hedge pain...and limited the amount of times I picked up the big kids. It was manageable. Ours were about 2.5y as well when ds2 was born.

  • I found with my recent singleton that many OB's don't go for VBAC's these days, with more risk & liability, I'm sure. I had a very rough c/s with the twins; vomited the entire procedure and my recovery/ pain meds pump management set up sucked, in a nutshell. Then they were in the NICU so I was not able to "Rest" when the babies rested and paid the price for overdoing it...

We moved to another state since the twins were born. This time around, my OB was going to allow me to try for a VBAC as long as this little guy was in perfect postion and I went into labor on my own, without induction, no pitocin, etc. Artificially breaking my water was as far as they would encourage labor to start.
However, my water broke at 29 weeks and my local hospital where my OB has privileges does not have a high level NICU so I was stabilized and transferred to a larger hospital an hour away. The OB's there made it emphatically clear that they do NOT do VBACS, period. I discussed my fears of a repeat horror c/s with those OB's, nurses, and anesthesiology.

Very long story-short-- I ended up with an emergency VBAC with #5, after all of the confusion, and in the long run, my physical recovery was almost immediate with the help of prescription strength ibuprofen. I was up and limping as soon as my nurse would allow me out of bed, versus after my C/s, where I was high as a kite, and I don't think I got out of bed until many many hours later and hobbled for a few weeks afterwards.
