FTM w/csections

I'm a FTM and had a csection I knew pretty much from the beginning I would have one and I was completely at peace with it by the time it happened. Now that DS is 6 months old and we are passed all the craziness and I'm healed more we have talked about future LO's (like in a few years). We have talked about delivery of another one and if I will do VBAC or another csection. For us it will probably be another csection just because of the circumstances surrounding the first.

So out of all you ladies wanting more LO's and you had a csection, have you thought about delivery with another one? Whether or not you will do VBAC or have another csection?

Re: FTM w/csections

  • I will attempt a VBAC. I did not want a csection and in the end didn't need one. my LOwas measuring in at over 11# but was born at 8#14oz.

  • But ultimately it depends on baby size. Dd was stuck because she had a big head.

  • I ended up with an emergency C-section because my babe was in distress and after 17.5 hours of natural labor my body was not doing well either and I had stopped progressing. I'm really conflicted. I went into my labor with the intention of going all natural but that obviously didn't happen. I would love to do a VBAC but at the same time I don't know if I want to go through all of that again to end up with another C-section. I feel like I was so caught up in having my natural labor that I might have kept my son in distress longer than necessary.

  • I'm with @Katie619 in that it all depends on the baby. We plan to start trying for the next one after LO's first birthday, when my body has fully healed from the c-section and we're mentally ready. I'm open to a VBAC, but my OB (who I intend to keep) said that subsequent deliveries would likely end up with a c-section.

  • I had a csection with my son 3 years ago. My water broke and I was in labor for 26 hours. I pushed for almost 3. Besides my water breaking, the doctor said he was not going to fit through the birth canal bc I was too small. I always thought I'd try for a VBAC and I prepared myself for one. Well my water broke again with June so I thought I'd get the chance. They couldn't give me pitocin and allowed me to labor for almost 10 hours. It wasn't really laboring bc I never progressed and contractions were only like 10 minutes apart. I chose to have a RCS. I am now at piece that I at least was allowed to try a VBAC and that I was the one who ultimately made the decision to have the RCS. If we have more children, I will have a RCS, no questions asked.

I think it's all about how your first experience was and the reasoning for having the cs.

  • Not to thread jack or anything, but since we've all had c-sections I'm going to ask.  Did anyone else have a bad reaction to the tape used after their c-section?  My dr. had bandaged me up and then taped me up for support and I got terrible blisters from the tape.  When I asked if that meant I was allergic, I was told no, that sometimes it just happens.

  • I would try vbac but I was also too small for her to fit. She was 8lbs 7oz so I guess it depends on baby size. I got a very bad uTi from having the catheter in so long (had it in for like 36hrs) I was throwing up for 4 days after we bought the baby home until they finally figured out it was a uti. I would be scared to have that happen again.

I attempted the VBAC and I'm glad I at least tried so I don't have regrets. My first was breech and my second was head down. I ended up with another c-section that I requested  after my epi didn't work and I was stuck at 6 CM for 3 hours. If I have another I basically have to have an automatic c-section by most doctors standards, but I've thought about seeking a doctor that will let me have a trial of labor after two c-sections and hiring a doula. If I had a doula last time I might have delivered vaginally.

ETA: Because I didn't have an experience where I went through L&D with DD1, I wanted to at least try. Had I gone into spontaneous labor and tried pushing and had an emergency c, I would probably have just done a RCS. I wanted to experience L&D at least once.

  • I am pretty neutral about trying for a VBAC. I am not optimistic that the next kid's head will be any smaller than this one's (my H and I both have extra-large noggins, and LO's head has been 100th percentile since birth). I would be willing to see what happens when I go into labor, but this time around I didn't even get to try to push b/c I never progressed past 9, so IDK what would have happened if I'd pushed.

@deedee1017 I had no reaction to the tape, it stayed on FOREVER! I want to know why they can't make bandaids with the same adhesive so they actually stay on when you get wet. #probablysoIwillspendmoremoneyonmorebandaids

  • I always knew I never wanted a c/s, but if I had one I would try for a VBAC. I had a c/s for several reasons: baby was sunny side up, pushing his head back while I was pushing during contractions (instead of tucking his chin down), head was too big, and his heart rate was dropping.

However, I did always kind of wonder if my OB wasn't gunning for a section right from the get go (she also thought he was going to be huge, he was 7#8oz), so I switched OBs. Couldn't have been happier. My 2nd OB was all for my VBAC.

Delivery was a dream. It was also really fast. I was one of the weirdos with a magical ute. I didn't really know I was in labor, but I suspected. It just didn't hurt like the first time. I had tons of false labor and walked around dilated to a 4 for weeks.

I was uncomfortable and a little achy at work, I went to my regular appt, was at a 7 and sent to L&D. The triage nurse didn't know what to do with me, I was "too happy" to seem like I was in labor. I stayed at a 7 for over an hour, so they weren't sure I was in labor, but didn't want to send me home since I was a VBAC candidate. The decision to stay or go was mine, I offered to stay for overnight monitoring. Then his heart rate dropped twice (due to descending so quickly). They checked me, since I had progressed, broke my water and less than an hour later I was nursing my baby.

@sleepy33 I had my c-section at 10 pm that night.  The next day I was told we had to hurry up and take it off.  It wasn't even on that long and I was covered in really bad blisters all around my waist. Like, so bad that I couldn't pull my undies up for weeks.

  • I would love to try for a vbac but I also worry because I have read that emergency c sections are more risky than planned ones.. Also I'm pretty sure I read that if you have a tilted uterus, which I do, you are more likely to have a breech baby which would mean another cs.

WTF, how is that not an allergic reaction then? Sounds like BS to me.

  • I think I would like to try VBAC, if the baby is not malpositioned. I planned for a natural birth, but wound up in labor for 26 hours (most of it medicated), and a c-section after I'd been pushing for a couple of hours. DS was sunny-side up and his chin was tilted, like @kirbabe. I also had a small fever at one point, probably due to dehydration, so they were following hospital policy by putting me in for a c/s close to 24 hours after the start of labor.

@deedee1017 I didn't have a reaction to the tape, but it took FOREVER to come off, and even then I had a bunch of adhesive that wouldn't come off even with frequent rough scrubbing in the shower. :(

  • @deedee1017‌ I had some blisters from the tape. When it was taken off two weeks later, the blisters were scabs and my skin basically had a rash from where the tape was.

I'm not having more. I don't think I would bother trying for the vbac. My OB said she was game if I was, but I'm not.

This almost exactly... over a week overdue, induced, stopped progressing at 7cm (was there for 12 or so hours), and 30 hours of labor before LO's heartrate kept dropping to end with a c/s,  we will probably cut on the dotted line if I don't go into labor naturally.  If they even mention inducing, they can shove it!!! That was very traumatic for me...
  • @deedee1017  My incision was closed with glue.  I guess this was not the norm.  I had no complications from it.

I also had glue or liquid stitches and had no complications. I hope to have that done again. But I refused to look at my incision site for a while it was at least a week. I'm sorta ok with that stuff but not on myself.
  • DD was breech, and I was terrified of having a c section, but actually other than the vomiting immediately after the birth my recovery was pretty smooth. There is something about giving birth vaginally that makes me want to do it with the next LO, but at the same time the thought of the pain down there makes me cringe. I think I'd be fine with a repeat C depending upon what the dr says and how LO2 feels.
  • It's truly a toss up for me. I would like to try for a VBAC but if my next LO is big like DS then I have no choice but to have a RCS. I pushed for almost 4 hrs and he was just too big so he got stuck, apparently my pelvis is rly small. Recovery was not pleasant at all but you gotta do what you gotta do.

  • I will have a repeat csection. I have medical issues that make a csection a safer route for delivery for me. As long as my kiddos get here safely, I'm ok with any type of delivery.

  • We aren't sure that we can even deal with a second pregnancy with how rough this whole experience has been for us. Ideally, if we do decide to have a second, I'd love to try for a VBAC. But there are so many factors that make me uncomfortable with that idea. It's going to depend on how long we wait, if I end up with GD again, etc. I really don't want another c-section if I can avoid it, but I also don't like the risks from VBACs.
  • I'm a vbac wannabe failure. I Ihad a 27 hour failed induction with my first and never dilated past 2. I was told I had a narrow pelvis and the baby never dropped. I was so excited about trying for a vbac and switched to a really supportive provider. At 8 days overdue with DS not dropping and not even dilated to 1 (and I had been trying everything), I requested a repeat c section. The scheduled c section was a lot easier on my body and I recovered more quickly then my c section after a lengthy induction. I was hoping to experience a vaginal birth, but I had the most "natural" c section I could. The curtain was lowered so I could watch and DS was immediately given to me and I got to hold him while I was stitched up. The repeat c section was actually a great experience for me.

  • I would go c section without a doubt.

LO was born with a 15' head and weighed 10.7!

Odds are against me that baby #2 would be smaller. And that's just disturbing.
