Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

binky, 16 mo old DD, & new babies coming soon

My DD took to a binky after her severe colic was done at just over 2 months. She now only uses for naps and nighttime and occasionally when someone leaves one in her sight during the day, but then it's only for a couple minutes.
30 wks pg with triplets now. We expect them in the next 2 weeks, so prob home about 6 weeks from now. I never plan to use a binky unless I can see they need one.
Better to break DD of the binky now or just let her keep it?

  • She's about to go through a pretty serious life change (and so are you!). If it was me, dropping the paci wouldn't even be on my radar until age 2, especially if she is only using it for sleep times. This is coming from someone whose kid was never really into one, though, so take my opinion for what it's worth.

    Good luck with everything!

From birth we've always allowed our kids to have a soothe for just naps and bedtime.  It never leaves their crib.  When my first 2 turned 2 years old is when we started to take it away.  It started with naps first, we "couldn't find it" but it would turn up for bedtime.  After about 2 months of that it worked out that DS birthday was near Christmas and DD birthday was near Easter so we told them that Santa's reindeer/Easter Bunny had some new babies and they needed the soothes but look what they left.  It was never an issue.  I think it was easier because at 2 they understood more.  Your triplets aren't going to want one because your child only uses it when sleeping so that won't be an issue.  With the changes about to come- I would just leave it be.

  • Count me in for team let him keep it for a while. Just sounds like too much transition for him all at once. Not to mention it might help with your own sanity - wow - triplets and a 16 month old!! My son is 19 months and my daughter is 2.5 months. He is now seemingly adjusted to her being around so we literally started to try to get him off the paci yesterday. He is extremely attached to it during the day and I don't want it to impact his speech. Yesterday I cut the tip off of it before bed and gave it to him. He cried for about a minute and then went to sleep which is actually typical. I'm interested to see how he did at daycare today without it! Good luck with the triplets!
  • ahh good luck!

we're in this process now. We have it for naps and bed only. Our struggle was that 2 kids in her room at daycare still use theirs. When we tried to limit it, she was continuously plucking theirs right out of their mmouths and grabbing it for herself. It took a good two months to get it to nap and bedtime only. we're expecting #2 in about 10 weeks..I'm not sure it will be gone for good by then

  • That's what I was worried about...If the babies like it and she wants it. Sounds like team let it be wins out. Can't begin the change today anyway. Ended up in l&d.. almost 30 wks..not leaving til they're here.

  • I don't have any real binky experience because neither of my kids used one (or even sucked their thumbs really), BUT I can throw in some serious mom experience and ask why you would want to complicate things with your DD right before you're about to have three newborns on your hands. There's time to break the binky habit later -- and the babies won't notice the binky for a while, so don't worry about the "bad influence."

    That's just my two cents.

  • I just wanted to say...congrats on the triplets!  I hope you can keep them in a little longer.  Also, make your way to the multiples board if you haven't yet.  Great ladies in there!

Sorry, no advice on the paci.  Mine haven't used one since they were 6 months.  They gave them up all on their own.  They had them available to them and just chose not to use them.  I thought it was weird but I went with it.  lol  Still no pacis and they are 20 months now.

  • First of all Congrats and good luck with the triplets!!

I would let her keep it for a while.  It could help her when her whole world changes once you bring home the 3 little ones.  After they are home then I would slowly try and break it.  16mo is still little and if any of the new babies uses one she might not understand why she can't have one.  Besides you have enough going on right now no need to stir the pot!
