Playyard for bassinet?

I'm due in July and trying to get everything together as soon as I possibly can. But as a first time mom, I'm unsure about a lot of things.
My concern is about using a Newborn Napper on the playyard I want, as a bassinet for baby for the first few weeks. Is this okay? I didn't know if perhaps the softness and angle would be too much for baby. I'm pretty tight on funds and am trying to get only what I need. I would rather the baby sleep in my room for the first few weeks rather than in the crib.
So is the napper only to be used as a napper?
I am also looking at an electric swing for baby, would that work better? I had hoped to keep that downstairs though since it's hard to move around..
Any suggestions? As I said, I don't want to buy a co-sleeper (husband is terrified of suffocating baby due to it happening to ppl we know), and I don't want to buy a stand-alone bassinet.
Thank you in advance!!!

Re: Playyard for bassinet?

  • ***added note:
I have added at decent $40 stand alone bassinet that I found on Walmart.com to my registry, in hopes that someone else will get it...
But I still would like to know if the playyard bassinet will work fine as a sleeper for the first several weeks.
    Thanks!

  • I am using a play yard for at least the first year, with added bassinet attachment. I have a butt shaker I got for $5, and a FP vibrating chair for $35. Babies do not need much, it's only the parents who don't feel like are providing because society says they need all the extra stuff.

Babies only need food, clean diapers, and love. It's the parents who want a place to put a LO when they need a moment.

I chose to spend money on diapers over the extra furnature and accessories.

  • I am using a pack and play for my baby (2 weeks old today).  It has the bassinet and changer and it works great.  He sleeps in it just as much as he sleeps in the bouncer seat I have.  He seems to like both of them just fine.  I don't have room for a crib right now and even if I did I could bet that I wouldn't be getting much use out of it.
  • I used the napper for the first 2 weeks (swaddled) .  After that I noticed my little one smashing his face up against it, so we removed it and now just sleeps in the play yard.
  • Play yard hands down. Get one that has vibration. The vibration is really helpful during the more fussy nights.
  • imageThis thing was probably the best gift we got. LO slept in this for the first few weeks and still naps in it almost everyday. He loves it and they are not expensive. Rock and play sleeper! And it vibrates!
  • Pack and plays are worth every penny. I have this one ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00486U566/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1395191654&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40 ) We have used this one with both kids. DS is still sleeping in the higher level now. They work great as a crib and later on can be used as a play yard once LO starts to crawl and you need to contain them.
  • Awesome, thank you all so much mommas! You've really helped me out :)
I am planning on getting these two below. As said earlier, I still registered for an inexpensive bassinet just in case someone wants to get it for me ;)
    Thanks again!!
  • My daughter loves her newborn napper in the pack n play. It's the thing she sleeps in for the longest. My oldest only used a pack n play... From birth until she was two. It was truly a great investment!
