Pink Eye

We just started a new daycare last week since our old one sucked...

Now LO has Pink Eye and is sick on top of that.

Has anyone had experience with this yet?  If so, how long did they wake up in the morning/from naps all crusty and swollen (I hate prying his eyes open)?

Also, how did you know you were getting the eye drops in? I am doing what they told us but I guess I can't really tell :(

I just hate seeing him in so much pain....

Re: Pink Eye

  • @kcd2007 Thanks!  How did you know they were getting in?  I am putting them in the corner and then opening up his eye but the drops are so "goopy", I don't know if they are really getting in.  Last night I droped directly into his eye and it actually bled a little bit (my friend who is a nurse thinks he probably had a little scratch from rubbing and it irritated it).

Did you find it better to wipe down or across with the wash cloth?  He fights me so hard, it is almost a two person job.

Was she really puffy and red around her eyes as well?  I know the wiping is irritating it...

  • Exactly what @kdc2007 said.  Blow in his face and and he'll instinctively close his eyes.  Put the drop in the inner corner and when he opens up, it'll naturally pull into his eye.  Eyeball stuff really CAN be a two person job.  Try holding the washcloth to his eye for as long as you can manage to soften the crust before wiping.  I think wiping from inner to outer corner is better than down.  Also, cotton balls are softer :)

  • warm the wet washcloth in the microwave for 15 seconds before you wipe, it makes a world of difference and hold it there for as long as possible. ALWAYS swipe from inner to outer corner of the eye and make sure you have very clean eyes.

Do you have the gel or the drops? The gel is crazy hard to administer and I would request the drops if you can. When doing the gel you should aim for the lower lid and try to massage the eye shut. Have your helpful assistant hold her arms and try to hold her head while you do it. The drops are a lot easier because you can kind of just aim towards the open eye.

  • @wasnotwas he is on drops but she said they are the strongest ones.  They are very thick!!

I will try to microwave trick.  He just fights me so much :-)  He woke up from his last nap able to open his eyes with only some goop and I hoping for none after his current one. I am so lucky my DH doesn't go out of town till he is completely finished with his drops or I would be in a world of hurt.

I am just a little fearful of aiming in the open eye after the screams he gave off last night.  I am a whimp and sucker...

  • Thick drops?  I've never heard of that and we've been through MANY rounds.

  • @sassygal29 truth is, the drops do hurt. But they work!

  • I've had the thick ones. They suck. I used to start squeezing it hard before I was really "in position". That resulted in missing sometimes, but that was easier than trying to pin her down/occupy her for longer.
  • @kdc2007 thanks so much for asking!  MUCH better.  No crust this monring :)  They are still a little puffy and red around his eyes but a huge improvement from yesterday.

Now if only we didn't have to continue to torture him with drops... ha

Thanks for all the suggestions and help ladies!
