Madeline pronounced with line instead of Lynn at the end

I just found out I'm having a little girl and have had my heart set on Madeline since before my son was born. I have always preferred the pronunciation with line at the end rather then Lynn. I realize that there are a million made-something's out there and even more maddys but I'm not big on nicknames anyway so I'm hoping we don't run into too many more. Besides the obvious of problem of people saying the wrong pronunciation and being corrected what are people's thoughts? I don't share names with family until the baby is born so just looking for some feedback! Thinking full name Madeline Rose very common two syllable last name

Re: Madeline pronounced with line instead of Lynn at the end

  • I really like Madeline (and also prefer the line pronunciation).

I would pronounce this spelling with the line sound.

I would pronounce Madeleine or Madelynn as Lynn

  • I pronounce it with the line ending, not lynn. You'll just have to correct those who get it wrong... not a biggie in my book. Well worth using a name you love! :)

Are you asking for opinions on the name, or how we'd pronounce that spelling?

I think it's a lovely name. You/ she will be correcting people her whole life on the pronunciation, but they'll only mispronounce it the first time.

  • My instinct is to go with the -lynn ending, but only because the people I know named Madeline say it that way.

Interestingly, I say Caroline with the -line ending.

I'd go with the name you love, and just gently correct people's pronunciation.

  • You are pronouncing it right and people will come around. Tell them to check out the rhymes in the Madeline book -- definitely the "line" pronunciation. :)
  • You will probably have to correct some people, but it's a lovely name.

  • I love it! I agree, you'll probably have to correct people often. I really like Carolyn, and even spelled that way people still say "Cara-Line". Madeline Rose is adorable.
  • I was always under the impression Madeline was pronounced -line and Madelyn was pronounced -lyn. Two different names

  • Thanks for the responses! I was planning on telling people it's Madeline pronounced like the books. Glad to see people like it, I don't like to tell family until the baby is here so my only other sounding board is DH who doesn't care (he only vetoes names). I guess I have my baby name! Thanks again!
  • You'll have to correct some people, but I don't see that as a problem.  I prefer the line pronunciation, though I have a little cousin with the lynn pronunciation.

  • I always thought Madeline had a line at the end of it and Madelyn was the one with the lyn at the end. No corrections needed over here.
