Anyone have advice on breast feeding baby with a possible allergy?
LO is 3.5 mo old and the ped and I are sure he has an allergy to something I'm eating because his stools are so mucousy, he was so gassy and fussy, he is taking zantac for reflux which could also be from an allergy, and his face continues to break out with little bumps and pimples with pus.
So I went on an elimination diet of dairy, eggs, soy, wheat and nuts to try to find the culprit, I did this for two weeks and his temperament seemed to be better, and the gas went away BUT his face is still severely broken out and tons of mucous in stools again. So I called the ped and she convinced me to put him on nutramgien formula for cows milk allergy for 2 weeks while still pumping and with reluctance I did. He just started it yesterday and hates it, he keeps trying to breast feed which is breaking my heart, not only that he is miserable from gas, he's so gassy and crying again AND his new clay in texture stools has given him a terrible diaper rash, however no mucous.
I really want him to continue to have breast milk I just can't figure out what he's allergic to, it seems when moms have gone on this elimination diet they figure out pretty quickly what was bothering their LO but its not coming so easy for us, can anyone offer help please? What do you think about being on the formula, should I stop, I obviously want to do what is best for him whatever that is. Thank you!
Re: Breastfed baby, allergy help
This is a really personal matter so I can't say what will be best for you and your family.
I was initially breastfeeding. My DS had reflux and allergies and was miserable all day long. We started him on Zantac and saw an improvement. He was still shaving stools with mucous, a little blood on occasion, a skin rash, and still had a lot of discomfort.
Our pedi had me eliminate dairy and citrus. After 10 days with no improvement, the doctor wanted me to introduce formula and pump with the hopes he would outgrow his allergies. We put him on Neocate. He refused to drink it at first; that stuff tastes awful.
He has been so much happier since we started the formula when he was 5 weeks old.
I remember feeling upset at first when he would not take the formula and would try to breastfeed. It was difficult for me emotionally. Ultimately, I got mastitis a couple times and my milk supply dropped so drastically that we decided to quit pumping as well. So reintroducing BF is not going to happen, we'll just have to give him what I had frozen.
We actually were able to switch him to Gerber Gentle this week and that has been successful.
I'm disappointed we couldn't continue to breastfeed, but I wouldn't change a thing. I'm so glad we switched to Neocate when we did. It was the best decision for us. Seeing him start feeling so much better after we quit BF was all I needed to assure me that was the right choice.
Good luck.
Also are you 100% sure you aren't still eating hidden sources of those foods?
Last, maybe the rash is a reaction to something topical, not related to the tummy issues? You could try switching lotion or something?
Allergies are tricky, good luck!
Thank you everyone I appreciate your help!! I was watching for hidden dairy as well, but again only 2 weeks of strict dairy watch so I'm hopeful now knowing that it took most of you longer
I will definitely go back to breast feeding asap, plus the Ped said maybe put him on the formula just to make sure there was no underlying issue which I don't think there is, because the mucous started clearing up a little more so to me that confirms that it was something in my diet. Can't wait to get back to it!
