Advice Please ?

I'm a single FTM (I Also posted this on the single parents board, I just want opinions all around). I've pretty much bought every thing baby needs already and plus I'm having a baby shower. I have a few things I want to buy, but nothing major.I really want to buy a laptop for school. I kind of feel guilty for wanting to spend 300 some odd dollars on myself. I haven't really bought myself anything for myself since I found out I was pregnant (not even clothes). I feel like that money should be put towards baby. Does this make me a bad parent? Am I wrong? Should I just use that money on baby? What would you do?

You need a laptop for school> to get a good job> to make money> to provide for your child. Makes perfect sense to me! Even if it didn't, you're still a human being who's allowed to treat herself. As long as baby has what they need, I wouldn't feel bad at all.

Unless you are seriously financially strapped, buy the laptop! Having a baby does not mean that you need to deprive yourself of necessities.

Do you have a laptop or computer that currently functions? (And, by functions, I don't necessarily mean that yes, you can get it to turn on and open a word processor. If it takes 3 years to turn on, I wouldn't really consider it functioning anymore...) If not, buy the laptop. I don't believe computers to be luxury items anymore, especially if you're trying to get ahead in an increasingly technological world. Will your baby go without diapers or a crib if you buy a laptop? If not, go ahead and buy the laptop!

Well, it might have been more savvy to buy less baby stuff until after the shower, then assess how much you need to spend, then figure out if you can manage both. You might get a ton of BRU cards, but you can't use those toward a laptop if you've already bought all the baby stuff.

For instance, I really want to buy a new camera that will cost a few hundred bucks. I'm waiting until post-shower to see how much other stuff I need to buy for the kid, though, before I assess that financial choice.

General advice -- don't go around asking others or yourself if something 'makes you a bad parent.' Parenting is a gamble and a challenge. Just do your best.

This seems like a no-brainer....buy the laptop. We're not swimming in money, so I'm trying not to go nuts myself. But just because you're having a baby doesn't mean you should give up things for yourself. Yes, there may be sacrifices, but you have to still continue to take care of and do things for yourself, too. Happy mama, happy baby.
