To Wii or not to Wii

Wii and ASD, bad combo?

My DH and I are not gamers at all, we know nothing about th different games and options, but it seems that many kids are really into playing. With the social aspect I would like my boys, age 5 1/2, to know about it and learn how to play with other kids, especially with their cousins.

Good idea or horrible idea?

  • I cannot answer for the ASD part, but we have a Wii.

You can get sports games, such as boxing, bowling, etc.  They're short played and they're not intensive like some of the other games you think of "world of warcraft", etc.

You could set a time limit and it's not like "i just need to get to the next level" kind of games.

Not ASD, but...DS utilizes gaming systems but with limitations, 2hrs MAX a day. If no limitations he could play all day. There is no system in his room, its on a tablet that we hold onto. However he has played console games too.

I think it helps challenge their hand-eye coordination, helps them to feel successful when they win, and kids will bond over it.

DS just beat Sonic 4, like the whole game. I couldn't get past level 2 as a kid.

  • We don't have any game systems either. DS has been to two playdates in the past two weeks where the other kid wanted to play video games but DS didn't know how. The other kid tried to teach him for awhile but got frustrated. DS has pretty poor fine motor. Anyway, we're going to spring for the Wii U for his birthday and try to play as a family. DS is a whiz at the ipad but the controllers are still a mystery. I was conflicted over whether to get DS one of these at first, given the ASD-proclivity towards electronics. I know what road we're starting him down. But I think this will be more of a social thing than the Ipad will ever be, because we can't play games with him on the Ipad. We'll put this in the living room and at least we can all play together.
  • My neuro/developmental pedi are very against them. We would consider it for a social interest with friends though. I'd greatly limit it though since kids are easily hooked--maybe thirty minutes a night or so as to not interfere with play skills.

  • Special snowflake. He asked my husband and his cousins to turn off the gaming system over the weekend because the split screen was bothering him. We're pretty anti-screen time for him, but he's still little.

  • Thank you so much!
They were getting a trampoline for their bday but we got one for free (woot) from a fellow SN mom.
Now we are considering the Wii, and I like that they can move around. It can only help burn some energy ;)
