Breastfeeding

efficient nursing?

Hi!

I keep reading that babies learn to nurse more efficiently as they get older but... when does that happen?

I have had OS but its been getting better since I stopped pumping and started block feeding.

Latley DS (almost 5 wks old) has been nursing for only 5 to maybe 10 min every hour and a half of so.

I cant tell if he has become efficient, if maybe its just flowing so fast that he doesnt have to work to get what he needs (I do leak when he nurses or I think of nursing and he spits up a lot), or if he just stops after a bit because he is frustrated with the flow.

He is gaining well but im just not sure whats going on.

He seems to be latching well still (often latches himself if he comes off) but my breasts do hurt afterwards but im guessing that's because I often start out very full when I switch sides.

Is he nursing efficiently or is my OS causing a problem still?

Thx!

I'm just trying to make sense of things :-)

Re: efficient nursing?

  • I wouldn't know for sure but my LO started nursing for 5-10 minutes also around 5-6 weeks, every 3 hours. He never had issues with weight or dirty diapers, so he was getting enough. However, I was sure that he would empty a side before switching to the other, most of the time he would just refuse the second side because he was already full.

So yes, they can get more efficient quite quickly, but I don't know if your LO is getting enough hind-milk or if your OS is still a problem. I would ask a LC.
