Once a month meals

edited March 2014 in May 2014 Moms
So I'm thinking of doing this thing where you cook once and get meals for the entire month to fill up my freezer before LO arrives. Who's done it? Do you like it? What recipes/resources do you use? Once a month meals (formerly once a month mom) is the one that I've heard of. Would you recommend it? How much freezer space do I need? I have the kind of freezer above the fridge, it's quite wide and deep but only has 2 shelves, am I crazy to think this could work in my small condo kitchen?

Re: Once a month meals

  • I have done something similer but not an entire month. I also have a small freezer. I found that I can fit the most if I put each meal in a gallon ziplock bag with as much air squeezed out an stacked flat. Once frozen I can stand them on end and fit lots of meals
I just plan out what meals sound good based on what is on sale. Sometimes I will make two weeks worth other times just a few nights.
Make sure you label and date each bag. I had a few mystery dinners.
Soup is super easy just leave out the extra water (label the bag so you know what to add) but you can also take meats add yummy spices and such and it will taste great as it thaws it maranaids itself. Another family favorite is to make personal calzones and freeze them before cooking, it takes up more room but super yummy and worth it when you make 12ish then you are set for a while.
    Good luck

  • I do this - but often times I don't want to make one of those frozen meals and end up cooking everything fresh. The meals are great for the days when you just don't have time or are too tired to cook.

  • It wouldn't work very well with just a fridge freezer. But they have mini menus that you can use. I bought a 1 year membership, and so far I've really liked it. Used it for baby and toddler food. And the there's been no complaints of the food so far. But definitely need a deep freezer for the complete cook out.

  • I am old school and actually have the book. passed down from my mother and then my aunt. The month def takes a large freezer. I have done the 2 week plan and that has worked pretty well. I will say the recipes are a little too unhealthy for me but the updated ones on the website you have to pay for seem healthier.
I made my own plan, did an inventory of our pantry and have been trying to work through the random ingredients I have collected over the past year. That really helped just knowing what I had on hand before going to the store.
