With DS I was a FTM, completely overwhelmed and pretty significant PPD. I manage to EP for a few months but eventually gave up. DD came and I was so determined to breastfeed. She was never diagnosed with failure to thrive but was VERY lethargic and wouldn't nurse. In fact, she didn't even cry for the first three days she was alive. She lost too much weight and we switched to formula. I didn't want to, but she wouldn't latch. So here we are, pregnant again. I want to breastfeed this one.
Anyone out there have luck nursing their 3rd (or others) after it didn't work out with other children?
DS: Oliver 12/28/10
DD: Alice 8/8/12
Re: Did not BF DS & DD but want to #3
DS was jaundiced and didn't have a good latch, I had 2 unhelpful LCs, and I was an overwhelmed FTM. We lasted barely 3 weeks and supplemented from early on.
DD latched very well from the start. It was painful for a couple weeks but she's done really well overall. I honestly don't feel like I've done anything differently. With her, I realized that BFing would be a challenge so I was more mentally prepared. But in terms of actually doing well with it, it's all her.
With DD I was in the hospital and on pain meds so when I tried to get her to latch on the 3rd day she wouldn't.
With DS1 I had to pump and he had health issues so it didn't work with him. I had PPD too so mentally I just couldn't pump anymore.
DS2 is 5 weeks today. I have been able to breastfeed him so far. It's been a struggle but we are finally getting the hang of things. I'm so glad I tried again. I go to a weekly nursing support group and the lactation consultants have been so great this time.
Good luck! You can do it!
@sweet*18 - How did you find your nursing support group, and how soon did you start going to it? I'm trying to figure out if it would make sense to find an LC before DS2 is born. (The one I met in the hospital was abysmally dismissive of DS1's non-interest in nursing.)
I don't know if I would still be BF without it. I look forward to it every Wednesday. They are very encouraging and understanding. I hope you can find one in your area.
