XP: 20 MO Not Sleeping Well

I've posted this in Eco Friendly Fam and Attachment Parenting, though I don't know if either was the exact right place to post.  I don't believe that CIO is right for our family nor co-sleeping and I still BF DS (I am practicing don't offer/don't refuse but he is showing no signs of slowing).  He just cut 3 of his canines in the last couple of months and I believe that he is probably cutting his fourth though I can't see it yet.  Here's my question: when I first lay him down for the night he wakes up about every 45 minutes to an hour until midnight, then he either sleeps the rest of the night or until about three.  Now last night he was back to sleep pretty quickly each time but usually he nurses for about an hour each time he wakes up (So I lay him down at 8, he's up by 9 and I lay him back down around 10 and then he's up again at about 11).  I would just write it off to teething except, he sleeps pretty good after about 12 or 1 and he always naps just fine.  If it was teething pain waking him up wouldn't it persist through the night and effect his naps, too?  Also, I believe that something is actually disrupting his sleep as based previous sleep patterns, I believe his sleep cycle is about 2 hours long.

I've tried teething tablets, even ibuprofen to no effect and I've recently employed lavender EOs but that doesn't seem to be having any effect either.  I've tried moving his bedtime up and back and nothing.  I've tried having SO go in and rocking him instead of nursing and that just wakes DS up and he'll be up for 2 or 3 hours after that.

Has anyone else experienced a sleep regression like this?  What did you do other than sleep training?  Wait it out?  Thanks for reading, y'all. I-)

Re: XP: 20 MO Not Sleeping Well

  • I have no advice but my LO isn't napping at the moment - she's sleeping fine at night but waking up a little earlier than normal. I initially thought teething but now I'm thinking that she's just having a hard time settling down and wants to be up playing/exploring - could that be your LO's issue? Maybe he's just having a hard time settling at night? Not that there's anything that I think you can do about that but maybe that's his issue? Does he sleep with any blankies or stuffed animals? Sometimes that helps my LO having something to play with and hold onto when she wakes up at night.

  • Oh also - could you leave a sippy of water near him? We leave a sippy of water on a table next to LO's crib and she'll grab it for a drink if she wakes up thirsty.
