Natural Birth

Scared second time mom.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this board but hoping to find some advise and/or reassurance. I had my first child in September 2012 and had the goal of doing a med free birth. I went in to it feeling totally confidant and know that this is what my body was made for. Everything went well and I was able to have my med free birth after just 12 hours of labor but it was incredibly painful and overall not the positive experience I had hoped for. I want to try for a med free birth with my second baby as well but this time around I am really scared because I remember how painful it was. I'm worried that the fact that I'm going in to this birth feeling less confidant and feeling really nervous and scared will make the pain even worse. A friend lent me a book on hypno birthing that I plan to read soon but wondered if anyone had any advice on good ways to manage the pain or any resources you think I should check out. Also any reassurances that the second baby is easier to deliver would be great! lol! Thanks in advance.

  • I was actually going to suggest Hypnobirthing, though reading the book is not considered a substitute for taking the class.  If you want to do a self-study course maybe check out Hypnobabies.

What about hiring a doula?  Did you have supportive providers?  Were you encouraged to move around during labor?  I found labor to be much more challenging while laying down, being in the bath was pure heaven for me!
  • I agree with looking into a doula. I had one for my first birth and it made a huge difference. She was a great support and positive energy throughout my experience. LO had a nuchal hand and things were pretty rough. I am pretty terrified of L&D again when we end up having #2. I know that I will be having a doula again as she was such a great support the first time. I have no expereince with hypno but that may be another great option as well.
  • Thanks for the advice everyone. I had a very supportive practice last time and was able to move around and do pretty much whatever I wanted during my last labor. No one so much as even offered me drugs and my nurse and husband were both fabulously supportive and helpful during my labor. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get in the tub as there are no practices near me that will do water births (the closest one is maybe 45 minutes away and I'd rather stick with the hospital that is closer to me since I had a good experience with the staff there last time). I just feel like the pain got to a point where I wasn't able to remember any of my relaxation techniques or focus on anything but how bad I was feeling. Maybe getting a doula would help with that? I will look in to some of the books you suggested as well.

  • Can you labor in the tub at all, and get out before the birth? I also second the doula suggestion. Good luck!

  • Yes, my hospital did not do water births either but you could labor in the tub. Or what about the shower even!
  • Hire a doula!!! She will be able to refocus you when you get into that going-out-of-your-mind place. Also just keep thinking "i have done this once, i can do it again!!" Best wishes!
