baby refusing bottle

Hey, ladies - I'm asking this for one of my patients.  I remember people talked about this awhile ago but I didn't really pay attention.

This 6 month old baby's mother is going back to work and refuses to take the bottle from dad.  She has tried all different types of bottles, BM and formula in the bottle, sippy cups, etc.  She even tried a spoon.  The baby flat out refuses.  I suggested maybe trying a different nipple flow, but other than that, I'm out of ideas for her.

Anyone?

Re: baby refusing bottle

  • The only bottle O will take is the momma bottle by lansinoh.

We tried several, with no luck. That onewas recommended months ago, so i tired and he took it first try.

Tip: warm the nipple before offering.

  • Did she try different temps for the bottle? L didn't really have this problem (boy loves his food) but my friends daughter is EXTREMELY picky and it took a very long time to figure out that the temp played a big factor.
  • Also, she needs to be out of the room/house when he gives the bottle. And have him be real calm with baby and try not to stress. Also do a paced feeding.

Offer the bottle at least once a day if not more, and offer it before baby is starving and crying. If they know a feeding is coming up have the bottle ready prior to melt downs.

  • MH is not very good at sitting still so from the very first bottle, he held B and walked around with him while he fed him.  B had zero problems taking a bottle.  It may be because he is an awesome kid, or maybe the walking around helped him?

Either way, a friend of mine told her H to walk around while he tried to give her daughter a bottle because she had seen that it worked for us.  She said it really helped.
  • Warm bottle and keep trying the same one. LO would get even madder at me when I tried to see if a different bottle or pacifier would work.

  • TBH I never got LO to take a bottle before daycare - and the daycare ladies were able to sort out LO. So if all else fails ...

When I went back to work at six months, Iris wouldn't take a bottle.  She's still pretty hit or miss with them.  For me, the solution has mostly been to nurse a lot when I'm home (including over nights) and to mix lots of breast milk into homemade purees since she's more willing to eat those than take bottles.  I also have an awesome SAHD husband who brings her in to nurse on my lunch breaks.  (I have a friend in a similar boat who went to her LO's daycare to nurse during lunch until she was a year old.) Perhaps not a super inspiring story for your patient, but the end result has been that I'm working full-time, she's still nursing, and she's still gaining weight and healthy.
  • Thank you - you all are awesome.  I'm going to call her and let her know to try those things :)

  • We also do the momma bottle it's the closest I found to a real nipple. Although my LO still won't take it from DH!

  • I found that I actually had to make it a very different experience from nursing. LO took a bottle best when he was sitting in his snug-a-bunny bouncer. I was also really surprised that he wanted to hold it as early as he did, but he did a much better job if I let him hold it and I just helped keep it at a good angle.
