? for STMs: Nursery Furniture

I have been trying to find a nice nursery set that includes more than just a crib and changing table. I want a matching crib and long dresser (like you would see in a normal bedroom) where I can use part of the top as a changing station. All the dressers I am finding with cribs are either tall dressers (6-8 drawers tall) or these mini dressers where it looks more like a large night stand instead of an actual dresser. What did you all do? Is there a store that I should be looking at that sells these types of things? Did you just mix and match and hope the color of the wood matched?

I have found a few but the selection is so tiny and I find that hard to believe but since this is the first time I have ever looked for this stuff I wanted to ask the experts :)

Thanks!!!

Re: ? for STMs: Nursery Furniture

  • I am a FTM, but we've already started looking. Almost every collection at Buy Buy Baby has a low dresser. You can add a hutch with shelves on top. They hardly had changing tables. Their displays all showed changing pads on these dressers. We went with a set like this.

  • We mixed and matched, and it came out looking like a complete set.  We used dressers that my MIL saved from DHs' childhood (beautiful quality) and found a crib that matched.  We used the lower dresser as the changing table and it worked out super well.  I'm glad we didn't waste money on an actual changing table.

  • I bought exactly what you are looking for from Babies R Us. Not all of their sets are like that, but I'd say about half are. Just wait until they have one of their furniture sales. I can't remember what my deal was, but it was so much off for each piece you buy, plus free shipping to home. It ended up being a pretty good deal. Or if you sign up for their rewards club, they do 20% furniture items every couple of months.
  • We had a dark stained wood crib and we went to ikea and found a long six drawer dresser that matched and put a changing pad on top. It worked great for us and now DD is 3 and it has grown with her really well.

  • I found exactly what you want at BRU. Have seen the same thing at Buy Buy Baby. We just got the little changing pad and nailed the straps to the back of the long dresser (you don't want that sucker moving!) and called it good. Changing tables are a waste of money IMO.

  • We had an old long dresser that we used to DD's nursery and it matched the color crib we wanted so it worked out. The dresser was not from a baby store and we just got a changing pad that attaches to the top and it's still working great (she's 16 months). I suggest looking at normal furniture stores too you might find better deals. Whatever color wood you go with you should be able to find a similar crib or vice versa. For example, the dresser is cherry and the crib we got is cherry. They work great together.

I used a dresser from a non-baby store and matched it to a crib I liked.

  • My MIL found someone selling a set on Cragislist. I researched the brand, made sure I was ok with it, and gave the go ahead. It was a crib with a changing table dresser. Has run the length of 2 children so far and will be used for the third.

However at the time, being a FTM, I wasn't thrilled with a hand-me-down, but now that I see how much $ has been invested into these beasts (said with <3) I'm glad we didn't splurge on something that has seen the abuse this set has seen.

  • We bought a Graco crib and found a used dresser and painted it pink. I looked and looked for a decent dresser and the quality for the money is just ridiculous. DD didn't move into her crib until 6 months, and now at 20 months, we are starting to transition to a bed. I'm glad I didn't spend a lot of money on nursery furniture for only 14 months of use, and now I don't feel bad to buy her a nice bedroom set that will last for years and years.

FYI - anytime they put "nursery" in the label, the price goes up, and usually the quality goes down. If you want to buy a new dresser, I'd recommend furniture stores, not baby stores.

  • Our crib is from BRU and we bought a long dresser from Ikea and the wood colors are quite similar.  Plus the Ikea dresser is cheap compared to what they sell at BRU!

  • We bought a crib, then went and bought actual bedroom furniture, not nursery furniture. It will last DS forever. It's super nice. With this LO we moved our only nice piece we had in our room (our short & long dresser), then went & bought a night stand to match it. DS's crib is will be used for this LO also. THEN we just went out & bought new bedroom furniture for our room!! YAY!!

  • We found a bedroom set with a twin bed that we liked at the local furniture store, and got that. Then we got a crib that mostly matched (white mixed with a more ivory white). Our logic was that the crib wouldn't be in there so so long, and we'd have a matching set we like for ages 2+ this way.

  • Awesome :) Thanks everyone! Looks like my best option may be to just mix and match. I found a crib that I love so hopefully I can find a dresser that matches :D

  • I found a solid wood dresser and had it refinished and added a tobacco glaze and use the top as a changing table. The cribs are an espresso color and I had the hardware changed on the dresser to an oil rubbed bronze to tie it all in.

we bought a 3 pc set that had a crib, a 6 drawer dresser (3 drawers on each side) and a 5 drawer dresser.  This was perfect for us, we use the shorter dresser as the changing table.  We bought our set from a store called Baby Furniture Plus but it probably won't help since they only have 3 locations in NC and SC.  However, the brand we bought (bonavita) is definitely sold at Buy Buy Baby.  Have you checked out Buy Buy Baby yet?  If there's one near you I recommend it.  They should have what you're looking for and if you get the right cashier they'll let you use the 20% off coupon for each piece of furniture.

  • We bought a Bonavita set (tall dresser, low dresser, and crib) from a local mom and pop baby furniture store with DD. A lot of times these little shops may not have all the pieces in the collection on display but will have a catalog so just ask if you find something you like.

In that case definitely check them out.  We used the Charlotte location because at the time I lived in Charlotte.  The SC locations were too far for us.  Sign up for their e-mail alerts.  We ended up buying our set on a really amazing independence day sale.  Their regular prices were a little too expensive for us.

  • Check out JC PEnney also! I wanted furniture that could last after the babies are out of their cribs. It just came in and I'm very impressed with the quality. We got the 3 piece set on sale and it was very reasonable!
