Part-time nanny- timing

We are hiring a part-time nanny. We have a 19 month old and #2 will be here in May. Up until now, we've only used my in-laws for daycare, but they need some rest and help now that we are having a second. Our current thinking is 3 afternoons a week, and probably a college student. (There are 2 major universities near us, both with good education and nursing programs.) The big question right now is when to bring the nanny on. Our current thinking is to bring the nanny on while I'm on maternity leave so (1) I have some help, (2) I get to see this person in action for a few weeks, (3) this person can see how we do things, and (4) DD, who has never stayed with anyone but us and her grandparents, gets used to this person. Does this plan make sense? Also, we are thinking Mon/Wed/Fri afternoons to fit with college class schedules, from noon to between 4-5 when DH gets home. Anyway, just looking for perspective. Thanks, all, in advance!

Re: Part-time nanny- timing

  • Good question! Both are on semester systems, which is another reason I thought the timing in mid- to late May was good. The university that is closer to me is a mostly-commuter public university with lots of non-traditional students and lots of students working their way through or at least helping pay their way. I think a ton of them would be thrilled with a job where they earn more than minimum wage, have set hours, and don't work nights and weekends. (Care.com had 6 pages of kids from this school looking for part-time gigs, yea!)

  • I would get help in the mornings, not afternoons. I had help with my 22 month old during maternity leave. She worked 8-1. So she would wake him, dress him, feed him and watch him until she put him down for the afternoon nap. So I only had to take care of the newborn. She would also take him to playgrounds and museums on free days.

  • Your plan sounds good. I would definitely take the help during maternity leave if you can swing it. Good to get the older one attention and you a break (2 kicked my ass for awhile).

The only thing I would suggest would be to consider non-college students also. We just went the PT nanny route, and I had a lot of interest, but we wound up going with a younger Grandma and we couldn't be happier. Reliability was a big concern for me, which I'm assuming isn't a huge issue for you with your in-laws, but our nanny is extremely reliable and just comfortable/experienced with the kids.

  • I second having the nanny in the morning instead of the afternoon. My mom watched my 2u2 and we did the same as you- had a PT nanny college student come in the afternoon. But I ended up paying to have her there while the kids napped which kinda sucked, b/c my mom was the one who really could have used some downtime. We ended up switching to FT DC once DS got mobile and it was just too much for my mom.
