XP: 20 MO Not Sleeping Well

I hope this is the appropriate place to post this.  I don't believe that CIO is right for our family and I still BF DS (I am practicing don't offer/don't refuse but he is showing no signs of slowing).  He just cut 3 of his canines in the last couple of months and I believe that he is probably cutting his fourth though I can't see it yet.  Here's my question: when I first lay him down for the night he wakes up about every 45 minutes to an hour until midnight, then he either sleeps the rest of the night or until about three.  Now last night he was back to sleep pretty quickly each time but usually he nurses for about an hour each time he wakes up (So I lay him down at 8, he's up by 9 and I lay him back down around 10 and then he's up again at about 11).  I would just write it off to teething except, he sleeps pretty good after about 12 or 1 and he always naps just fine.  If it was teething pain waking him up wouldn't it persist through the night and effect his naps, too?  Also, I believe that something is actually disrupting his sleep as based previous sleep patterns, I believe his sleep cycle is about 2 hours long.

I've tried teething tablets, even ibuprofen to no effect and I've recently employed lavender EOs but that doesn't seem to be having any effect either.  I've tried moving his bedtime up and back and nothing.  I've tried having SO go in and rocking him instead of nursing and that just wakes DS up and he'll be up for 2 or 3 hours after that.

Has anyone else experienced a sleep regression like this?  What did you do other than sleep training?  Wait it out?  Thanks for reading, y'all. I-)

  • Honestly, I wait it out. I've found that unless it's a fluke phase, the reason for crazy sleep changes usually comes to light when the pattern changes again, which it always does.

If he's been teething, he may just be trying to readjust to sleeping soundly early in the night. Also, your supply is lower in the late evening/ early night, so he may wake to nurse more frequently and get more milk: he could also be growing or about to hit a developmental milestone.

The great thing about baby/toddler sleep is that if you don't like it, it's going to change soon. The sad thing about baby/toddler sleep is that if you like it, it's going to change soon. ;)
