I know it's been a while since I have posted but life has been pretty crazy! My DS1 who has ASD is transitioning to the school district preschool program for children with disabilities and he has been doing really great in ABA! Unfortunately he has been having a really hard time with constipation. A week and a half ago i accidentally didn't give him miralax for a day and it caused him to really back up. He finally started pooping again on Tuesday but on Wednesday evening he started throwing up every 10 minutes. He was so weak and lethargic that our pedi had us take him to the children's er. Thank goodness we did because when we got here he was tachycardic from the dehydration. They think the vomiting was caused by the constipation so they are trying to clean him out, unfortunately he got 2 enemas yesterday and they really didn't help much. So today they will probably have to do more invasive procedures. I had already called a GI specialist who specializes in kids with autism to get him an appointment but the wait is a month. I called yesterday to see if we can get in sooner since he is pretty sick because of the constipation but I haven't gotten a call back yet. Hopefully if he poops and starts eating and drinking again today we will be able to go home. Does anyone have any experience with severe constipation? What helped your child? Thank you!

  • Well carrying DD, I had severe constipation and I took a glycerin suppository to help soften everything.

Unfortunately they tried that yesterday and it didn't work at all.

  • DS had always been a constipated kid.  He's been on miralax for years.  When he started K, he was holding his poop at school and then pooping at home.  He was hospitalized in November of that year due to severe constipation.  They gave him fluids, fiber one, and molasses enemas.  Finally after 2 overnights he was able to go home.  I had upped his miralax to 1 1/2 cap/day after that.  He's now back down to 1 cap/day.  I hope you're both home soon!

  • My boys have always struggled with constipation.  I'm sorry you're dealing with this.  We do Miralax, benefiber, glycerin suppositories, essential oils, detox baths, pediasure with fiber.  I also do probiotics.

Hopefully you find something that works!
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • I'm really sorry. :( Hope you're able to go home soon.

  • Dd had chronic constipation as a result of her low tone/gi issues. Smoothies in the morning with fruits, veggies, kefir and flaxseed along with lots of water resolved the issue.

  • Thank you ladies for all your suggestions! @BostonKisses2‌ we ended up having to do the full clean out with golytely. Unfortunately at some point the tube started coming out of his nose, the nurses didn't notice and he ended up getting some of the fluid in his lungs. Sunday morning he spiked a fever, and his heart rate, respiration and blood pressure were all very high. It turns our he had developed pneumonia. :( luckily he was doing better enough yesterday to finally come home. But he will likely need a colonoscopy to figure out why he has such bad problems. We will know more when we see the GI. My poor kiddo has been through so much and he did amazingly well considering. I am taking him to our pediatrician this morning to see how he is doing!

  • Poor kiddo! Matthew has encopresis and he's had to do the medical clean out before. He saw someone at CHOP when it was bad.
  • I'm so sorry, hope he poops soon.
We did a 3 day cleansing at home under the guide of GI doc.
I can't remember exactly how it went but...
We used 1/2 fleet enema for three days (once a day) and I believe the miralax was a full cap twice a day for th 1st day and 1 full cap a day after that. Poor kid had 10x more poop that he was supposed to.
Now we continue with miralax but if he gets backed up again we have to go an enema again.

    Is he blocked?
    Best of luck!
  • I just read your update.
    I'm sooo sorry.
  • Your poor kiddo :( I hope he feels better soon!
