Too early for baby to drop?

I know everyone is different, but I was just curious...I am 32 weeks 4 days. Everyone keeps telling me they noticed the baby dropped a little bit. Is it too early for the baby to start dropping? I thought that was something that happened a few weeks before.

Re: Too early for baby to drop?

  • My belly definitely got lower at 32 weeks, but they said at my antenatal class that this is just baby starting to get into position. It's not the same as "dropping" and it doesn't mean the head is engaged. It just means baby is getting ready to do all that stuff. Organised baby!

  • I'm only 30 weeks but my belly has dropped in appearance. It is because baby has moved to head down with his feet up and butt a little below my belly button. This happened with ds1 as well although not till 32 weeks. It isn't the same as when he really dropped at 36 or 37 weeks.

  • I had a sonogram the other day and I'm kinda nervous because baby is still laying width wise and head is not down but I also had a drs apt earlier the same day and she said everything was great so I guess I shouldn't be worried lol I'm 31 weeks.

I noticed this morning that I've really dropped.  On the one hand, hooray for lung capacity.  On the other, not looking forward to repeats of the comments I got with my daughter that "I'll never make it to term" because he's dropped already.  I really fear what my reaction to those comments will be this time.

Given my history, you may see a news snippet of "Pregnant woman goes ape shit all over strangers at mall"

That said, dropping can really happen at any time (or won't).  People are built differently; it's not an indicator of baby coming.

31 weeks is too early to worry about baby still being transverse.

My DS didn't flip from transverse until 34 weeks and this LO is frank breech (butt down, feet and head up) at 33 weeks (tomorrow).

  • Dropped in the ready-to-deliver sense? yes.  But as baby grows and shifts positions, your belly could definitely look lower.  I have always carried pretty low in general and even then it was obvious to me when I truly dropped before DD (happened within the week of delivering her).

Yeah, we just had this discussion in another thread (called "Baby's Position" - should be in the first couple of pages of threads). Mine is also transverse and my OB said we won't worry about it until 36 weeks. Still lots of time to change.

I dropped really early with DD, around 33 weeks. They checked me at 34 weeks for the first time because I had been having so many BH contractions. I was pretty effaced but not dilated at all. Then I stayed that way until 39+ weeks when I started to dilate. I think it's different for everyone. I've carried this one so low the whole time, I think it will be hard to tell when she "drops".

  • My belly started dropping a bit around 30 weeks.  I was carrying VERY high, but I'm pretty short (5'1").  I've definitely started dropping though :)

  • At my 30 week appointment they said baby was very low with head in pelvis and feet up just waiting to get started. They didn't seem concerned about her position but did mention it was what causes my hip pain and pressure. Our 3D growth scan is this Thursday so I'll see if she's moved but I don't think so considering where I feel kicks and moves...
  • I've carried low this entire pregnancy so if I was to "drop" anymore the baby would be coming out.
As the pregnancy has progressed I have had more pressure on my bladder so I'm not sure if he is shifting his way down even though it isn't noticeable.
  • I've been carrying low this whole time but today was the first time someone asked me if she had dropped. I feel like it's a little early for that but perhaps she has turned over from breech position.

This. I am 30 weeks and lately, my belly seems to be constantly shifting position, depending on where baby decides to position himself.

  • @jennish11 that makes sense. I swear it's from my long torso. My baby isn't anywhere near my lungs to even effect my breathing. I'm sure as he grows it will get worse. I am thankful I don't have an issue breathing, but he does hang out on my bladder so that's not cool either.
  • Ive been dropped since 25 weeks. Baby is head down pushing on my Cervix I am only 29 weeks . Due may 31 but were hoping she stays in till 39 weeks. Been on bed rest since 23 weeks. We can only hope she stays in till full term.
