Gardeners Come In!

Couldn't sleep last night (shocker) and I decided how and where I want to plant my garden and flowers. In going to do mostly vertical pallet gardens hanging on my fence in the only place that gets enough sun.

But I also want to do some hanging pots to beautify my butt ugly garage, lol! I'm going to mount painted pallets to hang the pots on to help keep the water of the garage walls.

OK, now my questions. This is in my backyard and we want to put a sandbox by the flowers. What kinds of flowers will grow well in partial shade but also be kid friendly? Initial I was going to do two big pots with Hydrangeas, but I learned they are poisonous.

I plan on talking with my local greenhouses, but it's still only 9 degrees out and most of them aren't open to the public yet. Also, I'm not very good at gardening. And books or magazines you recommend?

Re: Gardeners Come In!

  • Oh, another question. Any recommendations to keep the f***ing squirrels out of my plants?! They killed all my flowers digging them up last year.

  • We had luck with a trap last year. We had chipmunks digging in my flower beds, so we set traps out. They are the humane ones that just trap them inside and then I would drive to the park to release them. We captured eight in one week last year and then a few more throughout the season. As far as hardy flowers go - zinnias are always extremely low maintenance for me. The kids also love them because they are so colorful, so they may be nice by the sandbox. Are you doing veggies in the pallets? Do you know where your pallets came from? I've read that the pallets themselves can be toxic if they were used for shipping certain materials, so you shouldn't use them in your house or close to food. Just something to consider. I have the sads because I can't do a garden this year. We'll be moving during planting season and then I won't have a yard. We may try some containers, but it's not the same :( Sorry about the long paragraph. I don't know what's up with TB.

  • Most of the pallets I can get come from DH's work. They make plastic from corn and are about the most Eco friendly place I know so I *think* they would be safe. Otherwise I could check with the greenhouses. My last option would be to make my veggie garden in puts and hang the pots from my fence (or of the pallets like I want to do in the garage).

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Man, perhaps I should hire you to come do my house.  It's in MI.  My neighbor is this retired person who used to live in our house when she had kids, and she always did this fantastic garden...and she's like, what are you going to do?  Um...I haven't the faintest idea.  We have window boxes...  It's our first year here and I at least have to fill those.
  • My parents had a squirrel problem 2 years ago. My mom had my dad make a squirrel feeder from a design she found on the internet. They filled it with whole unsalted peanuts in the shell. So they put the feeder on the opposite side of their property: away from most of their gardens. The squirrels stayed on that side :) may be something to look into. Good luck!
  • No advice - I'm more of a veggie gardener than a flower gardener, but just wanted to chime in that I am so excited that it is almost spring.  We got our spinach, lettuce, broccoli, and radishes planted this weekend.  Love playing in the dirt!

  • @cinnasugar‌ This will be my first attempt at my own veggie garden. What do you think will plant and grow well in pallets? I'm doing the raised planters so I can still tend it 7, 8, 9 months pregnant and so reach, lol! I know like leaf lettuce, peas, beans, and was planning on trying carrots on the top row. What else?

  • I've never done pallets, but I would think something that doesn't need a huge root structure - leafy greens like lettuce or spinach. Not sure if you could do vining things like cucumber when it gets warmer, but pole beans would probably work.  Herbs - basil, cilantro, etc.  I just googled an image of vertical pallet gardening and there are some good ideas!

  • Strawberries?

  • That's a good idea! And I don't even have to worry about keeping the berries from my kids. They don't like fruit, lol.
