Breastfeeding

7.5 month distracted & reverse cycling?

DS is 7.5 months old. He is ebf. We offer solids/purées twice a day on average.

He was sleeping 4+ hours at a time, getting up once or twice a night.

He has been getting more and more distracted at the breast during the day. He eats well when he is half asleep at night. He has been getting up every 2 hours or so. We nurse and he goes back to sleep.

Is it a normal sleep regression or is DS reverse cycling? Could it be related to how distracted he is?

Any tips? We probably won't sleep train, but I am interested in trying other things!

I do work and DS gets bottles at daycare. He is there from 7:30 to 5 and usually eats 16 oz or so. I nurse him twice in the AM and once or more in the PM (depending on how much it takes to get him to sleep. He is offered purées at daycare and once in the evening at home.

He usually goes to bed about 7:30 and he usually wakes around 6:00 am. He takes multiple naps at daycare. He is not a particularly good napper, often naps are only 45 minutes, but we let him sleep as long as he wants.

Any ideas?

  • it sounds like he is probably waking up more to nurse if he isn't nursing well during the day. it's pretty common for babies to get distracted as they get more aware of their surroundings or start working on new skills like sitting, crawling, or walking. kellymom has some good suggestions on how to nurse a distractible baby. can you try to nurse him in a dark and quiet space, maybe with some relaxing music, to help him concentrate on having a longer nursing session?
