Eating...ugh!

Anyone have problems with their kiddos eating meat? My twins are normaly super good eaters and aren't picky except when it comes to meat. Any sort of meat! They'll pick it out of hotdish's or lasagna. I'm not sure if it's the texture or the fact that they have to work a little harder to eat it or what the deal it. As a standard test, they had their iron tested at their 12 month appointment and there were no issues but I want to be sure to keep it that way. Anyone else deal with this meat problem? If so, how did you get them to eat it or did you feed them something else to get the nutrients? Thanks!

  • DD was like this early on, but she came around.  Keep trying?  Perhaps shredded or ground varieties are easier, although you've obviously tried that.  We eat soy and beans as protein and give Cheerios and eggs for iron since we're not huge meat eaters.  After eating a LOT a few weeks ago, DD is now only eating fruits at most meals, and we're just rolling with it.  As long as the iron is good, you're probably fine.  Give some high C foods or juice with iron foods (instead of milk) to help it absorb.

  • Same here! I snuck some roasted chicken into a cheese quesadilla and DD ate it none the wiser, but otherwise, she rejects all freestanding meats. I agree with @brachysira--eggs are a go-to for us.

  • We have the same issue with fruit. He loves veggies and meat but won't touch fruit. Both my kids are that way, little snots. ;)

  • DD will eat meat, she loves chicken. But DH is vegetarian, so we rarely eat meat at home, it's usually just if we are at someone else's house for dinner, or maybe if we go out to eat.

Anyway, we make sure DD gets iron the same way we do: eggs, leafy greens, legumes... She also eats iron-enriched cereal most mornings as part of her breakfast. I'd say just keep offering the meat, and in the meantime use vegetarian sources of iron to fill in the gaps.

We do a lot of quinoa since DD isn't a huge fan of meat. It was one of the first foods we found that she was willing to eat, and still one of the only foods she'll consistently eat.
My kids love quinoa, too!  Which is great...but they make suuuuuuch a mess!!
My husband always complains on couscous night.  Going to have to clean up the kitchen!
