Warning: poop talk. Seeking advice.

Hi fellow toddler mums. Seeking your wisdom. I'm concerned with my LOs bowel movements. Or lack thereof. I'm leery to label it constipation because at times she does pass hard "nugget" like stools but she now seems to hold back her poop and cries hysterically whenever she tries to go. I'm thinking it may have to do with our transition to whole milk? I can see the poop, it's as if it's stuck. I've literally had to help remove it for her. My heart is broken. I've called her pedi and followed their advice
(prune juice every day, "p" foods, fiber rich, etc) but I'm feeling like there's more to it now. It's happening way too often. Should I try a milk alternative? Soy? Almond? I can't keep seeing my baby in such pain. Any advice? Does anyone have similar experiences, solutions, or thoughts on the milk allergy hypothesis?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Warning: poop talk. Seeking advice.

  • I'm milk sensitive and I get the opposite problem to constipation. My dd used to get constipated like this because she pretty much only ate cheese. Apple juice is another good constipation aid, not as good as prune, but it works too. I don't have any other advice, I'm sorry!

I'm sorry you're going through this! I hope you both find relief soon.

  • No, no supplements. I can't wrap my head around what could be causing this. We've altered her diet and everything. I'm so afraid I'm missing some sign. I know she's still young but my fear too is that she may become so afraid of going that it may interfere with successful potty training down the road.

  • The later. She tries but it's so hard. She turns bright red, even gets sweaty. Positively heart wrenching.

  • My niece had an issue like that. She had a painful poop once and after that she would stop herself from going. The only time she would poop was when she was sleeping and it would be so big, like tennis ball size, that she would be screaming in pain. This went on for awhile. They tried foods and over the conter meds to help but she would do everything to stop it. Ultimately, they had to give her prescription meds, not sure what it is, and shes doing great now. It doesnt seem like any permanent damage was done but i know they were concered about that.

  • Would she eat a banana a day? Also, how much water is she getting?

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • Our pedi said we needed softer stools and less straining so that she would be good to go for potty training.  She's always been prone to constipation.  We stopped giving her rice cereal/snacks and bananas.  I started giving her about 18 oz milk and about 20 oz of water with a little juice added each day.  We've slowly reintroduced limited quantities of the bananas and rice.  This has made things fine.  I don't know why she needs so much hydration, but this is the main thing that helped us.  We also cut up prunes and microwaved them with a little water to soften them.  But since DD is practically a fruitivore, this fiber didn't seem to really matter.
