High blood pressure post partum?!

So, my blood pressure throughout my entire pregnancy was perfect. When I had my son, it was perfect in the hospital. I was there 4 days with a csection.

At my 6 week post partum visit, it was a bit high. My OB brushed it off, saying it was probably a random thing.

Well, I'm at my parents house, and my dad has a blood pressure machine, so I decided to check it. It's high. Like really high. It was 160/90. I normally run 120/80.

I'm baffled! And freaking out a bit.

I take thyroid medication due to a complete thyroidectomy from cancer. However, I recently had bloodwork, and my labs came back okay.

I plan on caing my primary care doctor on Monday, but was wondering if anyone has experienced this. It's a bit unnerving!

Re: High blood pressure post partum?!

  • I don't think it's stress, only because it was high at my 6 week post partum, and now is apparently still high.  My Dad has two blood pressure monitors, so I took one home with me.  My top number is anywhere between 140-160, and my bottom is 90-100.  Not fun, especially since my blood pressure has always been perfect!

Anyways, I called my primary care and they're actually getting me in tomorrow afternoon, thankfully.  I just want to know WTF is going on

  • My blood pressure was perfect through my entire pregnancy. When I went into the hospital to have my daughter, it was elevated. We mostly attributed it to nerves. Well, it never went down. I'm still on medication for it right now. My doctor thinks I should be off it by 6 months out. He said it just Halle s sometimes and to cut back on salt intake and to start walking 3 times a week. Just enough to get my heart rate up. He said something about retaining fluids and blood volume from pregnancy. I hope I can come off the medicine by my next appt. My blood pressure has been perfect my whole life so it was a shock. Much like yours. Hope you can get it resolved.
