Re: talk to me about blankets and pillows

  • WEll I'd never say "whats' wrong with you" because when I started J with a blanket (and, gasp, bumpers!), I woke up 3 times to go check on him. THey pound this safe sleep / SIDS stuff into our heads so hard that it is scary!

It's MN. It's cold.  He started being able to sit up from lying down on his own, and I just figured there was no way a small blanket could be that unsafe. WIth the bumpers- he was getting limbs caught, so I used the mesh ones, but then he was still whacking his head so hard that he had bruises.  So I figured it was time.  Much more peaceful sleep since then!

No pillows though- I don't think he needs them and quite honestly, maybe this is silly, but I have neck / pillow issues and can't imagine trying to pick out a pillow that is comfortable for somebody else, so we'll wait as long as possible on that.

  • We use a blanket in the crib but we do not use pillows, so I voted SS. We have one blanket, one of the crocheted/holey blankets, but I will say that he tends to kick it off in the night.

  • I started off with a light knit blanket bc I convinced myself that since there were holes it was safer. I still checked on him multiple times. I agree with @JSS1002‌ they do scare you with the SIDS stuff until you are paranoid. I have a naturally hot baby and I still get hot flashes so I keep the house a little cooler...hence the blanket.

  • DD moves around too much through the night, it would probably never stay on her anyway... she moves around every 10 mins.
  • SS- we use a blanket, but no pillows. Like @JSS1002, we're in MN - it's cold. B has never been a fan of being swaddled/zipped in a sleep sack. We stopped swaddling around 3 weeks.

  • SS - We still use a sleep sack, but will probably give him a blanket soon. I don't see a reason for a baby to have a pillow though, so we'll be waiting a while for that.

We gave my daughter a blanket when she was about one and she didn't have any issues with it. She only just started using a (small, pretty flat) pillow at almost 2 1/2 years old.

  • SS- No sleep sack, blankets or pillows. She wears a onesie with a footed sleeper on top. We keep a small space heater in her room.

My son is 3 and had a pillow but has no idea how to sleep with it. Lol.

I picked "already use 'em" (agree with JSS, wouldn't say "what's wrong with you?" if you choose not to) but we just use blankets. DS never liked being swaddled, but he used to love being tucked in with a receiving blanket. So he's had blankets almost ever since we got home from the hospital. No pillow though. Our other kids got a flat pillow when they graduated to their big bed, so we'll wait 'til then for DS as well.

ETA: He loves laying on the pillow on my bed! He just doesn't get his own yet.

  • I put sleep sack for life. With my son, we used a sleep sack until he went to his big boy bed at 2 years. Up until that point, he couldn't keep the blankets on and got cold. We will probably do the same with our daughter, except she may stay in the crib longer since there will be no baby that will need the crib.

We will start using a pillow when she's in a big girl bed too. But we do sometimes let her sleep on a boppy right now because it helps tremendously with the pressure build up due to constant fluid in her ears.
  • Ss- sleep sack when he sleeps alone but we generally co sleep so we put him on top of our blanket but under his own.

  • Sleep sack until he's out of the crib. That's what we did with grant and it worked out fine.
  • She got so mad at her sleep sack so we transitioned to a blanket. No pillow though.

  • Lo has multiple blankies and loves them all.  She has had them for months...and yes...bumpers the whole time! But no pillows or stuffed animals in the crib.

  • No pillows in the crib. Sometimes we use a blanket, other times a sleep sack. But she comes to bed with me after her first waking, so then she has blankets covering her too.

  • Neither. We use fleece footed sleepers and keep it a little warmer in her room.

  • Will uses a fleece type 1 layered blanket at night and often times he will use his lambie (a soft stuffed lamb about the size of my hand) as his pillow. I'll probably make him a light weight pillow when he's a little older-- thinking closer to 16 months.

  • SS - We will stay in sleepsacks until they move into toddler beds around their 2nd brithday.  Then we'llgive them pillows and blankets.  I may start giving them each a blanket now as a lovey, because we are having major issues with my son and his binky.  His binky is his lovey, and he's freaking out about not having it during waking hours all of a sudden.  T is starting to attach to hers in the same way he did.

  • Suffocated with a blanket I meant. Sorry on my phone!
