High-Risk Pregnancy

Cerclage

I had an emergency cerclage placed at 24 weeks due to an incompetent cervix. I was placed on strict bedrest until delivery. 5 weeks were hospital bedrest. I was curious to moms who have done the whole getting a cerclage in earlier what your experiences were? Were you able to go back to work and avoid bedrest?

Re: Cerclage

  • I had an emergency cerclage placed with DD1 which held for 2 weeks of hospital bedrest.  With this pregnancy, I had a preventative cerclage placed at 14w.  I was on modified bed rest and then was put on stricter bedrest when my cervix started to shorten, which was around 24 weeks or so.  I was able to work from home, and went in to work a couple times for meetings (I have a desk job so nothing physically strenuous).  I am now 36w2d and just got my cerclage out at 36w, and my doctor has pretty much lifted any kind of bed rest restrictions at this point.

They weren't planning on putting me on bed rest unless my cervix shortened, which it did.  So it may just depend on how things go for you.

  • I had a preventative cerclage at 13 weeks. My husband and I were sure I'd need to go on bed rest at some point (like I did when I was pregnant with our first son and needed an emergent cerclage at 23 weeks). I am a stay at home mom and we thought we'd need my mother in law to help take care of my son during this pregnancy. However, I am now 34 weeks, my cervix has remained long and closed and I have not needed any bed rest (fingers crossed things continue to go well).

What was your cervical length at the time of your cerclage? I had an emergency cerclage at 19 weeks at 1.7 cm and given progesterone suppositories and told to take it easy. They limited me to 1/2 days at work with no exercise...but overall a lot more active than bed rest. Weekly cervical checks showed everything looking good. I would think if you had a cerclage earlier next time around and got a good amount of your cervix included in the cerclage then you could avoid bed rest.
  • I had a preventative cerclage placed at 14w after a loss at 22w due to IC and PPROM. I have had no bedrest (32w now) and have no reason to expect it at this point. My cervix has stayed long with very little thinning. I've been going to work full time until 28w when I cut back to 30 hours a week, but I have pretty much a desk job too. Good luck to you!

  • I had a preventative cerclage placed at 14 weeks and never had any shortening nor bedrest.  I was only put on pelvic rest and was not allowed to exercise more than just walking.  I am now 39 weeks 3 days with no signs of active labor (only dilated to 1 since week 37) and my cerclage has been out since 36 weeks.

  • I'm 34w and got a preventative cerclage placed at 14w. I've had no BR but have tried to take it as easy as possible this pregnancy. I get it removed at 37 weeks.

  • Cerclage placed preventatively, but at a very low measurement (1cm). I was placed on restricted activity the day my short cervix was diagnosed (1hr walking a day the rest sitting or laying down) and a few weeks later my OB decided to just put me on full bed rest until delivery just to be safe. I've been bed resting for 8 weeks now and hope to keep going another 8 since my cerclage is very stable despite the low measurement. I'm also taking p17 shots.
