Strange, stinky Poo

We are formula feeding our twins. We have from day 1. We have't changed their formula. For the last 3 weeks or so, their stools have REEKED! There is a very distinct chemical type smell, About the only thing I can compare it to is this: When I was gardening a few years back there was a stink bug that sprayed my shoulder. That is almost exactly what their poo smells like. Any idea what could be causing it? I mean, I understand smelly diapers, but this isn't your usual poo smell.

Gut flora can fluctuate and change as they get bigger. That can change the smell a lot. Mine although BF their diapers smell exactly like vinegar soaked pennies where as my first smelled like buttered pop corn and it's awful. I never thought in a million years would I google poop until I became a mom! But if they seem uncomfortable or have hard bellies I would call the doc. As they grow they will process what they need out of the formula and the rest will pass like sometimes it may smell like iron/metallic if their little bodies don't need that particular mineral therefore changing the smell. Did that make sense? I suck at explaining things. So they may be ridding part of the formula they don't need that comes out extra stinky.

ETA: my first was formula feed for 7+ months and it changed smells, consistency, and colors a lot.

Have you changed their vitamin or iron supplement if they get one? Even the brand? Formula brand? Diaper or wipe brand?

I agree with PP, if no change that you can think of, call ped.

If the consistency is still normal, I wouldn't be too concerned. If it's not, then I would call the pedi. Really stinky and watery poo turned out to be a dairy allergy for my guys. Came on suddenly between 12-13 months, even after being fine with dairy before.

They were already scheduled for their 4mo shots this coming Wed., so I will mention it to the doctor then. Their stools are "normal", in that they have a normal consistency with the rare loose stools. Speaking of their vaccines, I have to do this round alone, hubby can't get the day off. Any pointers to help survive the utter melt-down? Theirs not mine.

Ask ahead of time if one of the nurses can lend a hand with holding and soothing. Typically, they always do at our office, but I think it's helpful to let them know you will need them for a few extra minutes before they run off to the next patient. Also prep everything you will need for the rest of the day beforehand. Otherwise, you might be stuck with two cranky babies and no free hands to make yourself lunch, prepare bottles, etc.

We only have a singleton on the outside now, but this is what I would probably plan on... Change them back into their clothes (minus pants) before the shots and have a bottle ready for each. I'd probably bring the car seats in: one baby's shots, dressed and into the car seat with the bottle, then the other twin's turn? DD usually had a little bit of a meltdown cry briefly, fell asleep, and was back to normal when she woke up again.

Well, they had their shots yesterday. They had a meltdown, but each lasted about 12 seconds so all was well. However, this bone-head mom forgot to mention the stinky poo. I guess I was so worried about how to deal with their shots I forgot to mention the poo. Duh! *smh*
