Scary- need advice

Dd has never really had the flu and has only puked liquids once or twice. Well yesterday she was acting normal and playing then suddenly starting puking a lot! When she was puking she was like choking on it where I thought she wasn't breathing. Got her cleaned up gave her water she was acting fine . Well she continued to puke every 20 min and when she would puke she would do that choking thing and become limp and lathargic. I panicked and took her to the er since it wouldn't stop . She continued every twenty minutes until they gave her zofran. The zofran stopped the puking . I've been watching her closely since and she's been alright just a little out of it. She's been begging for food and water so we've done clear liquids and bland food slowly and she's been ok. Doesn't seem to have a fever. Do I have every reason to believe that this was just a fast stomach bug? She's playing now but I've been a nervous wreck that she is just going to start puking with no warning again. I think the non breathing and limpness as well as the frequency really has me spooked. I have no reason to believe she got into anything bad as I am with her 24/7. Does this just sound like a typical sick toddler episode ? Thanks ! The er was really hectic but they just assumed gastro virus.

  • The same thing happened to DD last year.  She was SO sick all night.  Then she woke up happy and acted like nothing ever happened.  It was just a quick stomach bug.  As long as she's holding down the liquids she's probably fine now.

  • No advice, but sorry you're going through this, and I hope your LO feels better fast!
  • DD just got this on Thursday evening. She just kept puking and puking and puking. It was horrible, but she was fine by Friday night. We went to the doc and he said it was a stomach virus.

Just do what you are doing and try to relax. I know that's easier said than done, but she will be fine! Good Luck Momma!

I'm not sure what advice they gave you at the ER, but just wanted to add my 2 cents from having older kids and dealt with this a few times. Water right after puking is a no-no, it will just make her puke again. Give her belly a few minutes to settle and then give her teeny (like A teaspoon at a time) of pedialyte, Gatorade, or flat caffeine/ sugar free ginger ale. stick to the BRAT diet (banana, applesauce, white rice, toast) in small amounts, every half hour or so. Good luck, hope she is feeling better soon!

  • So far three of my kids have had this in the past 2 weeks, one of them being today.  Dexter has avoided it so far.  Each lasted about half a day.  It was crazy how sudden it happened, too.  Some liquids, bland foods (like you mentioned) and plenty of rest seemed to have done the trick for them.  Sorry you had such a scare!  I hate when my smaller kids puke because they do struggle with it.  My 5 year old was having a tough time with it and he would just cry and cry in between because it was scaring him and he didn't "know how to make it stop or get all the way out".  :(  Needless to day he went to bed early tonight.  It sucks to see them feeling so puny.   I hope your little one starts feeling better soon!

  • Thanks ladies glad to see it sounds like the norm right now . Yes er said no water until her stomach has calmed. Poor thing was screaming crying for water. Once the zofran kicked in we did small amounts every 10 min . Today we stayed with applesauce , Cheerios, toast, and eggs throughout the day. Also went between small amounts of water and pediyalite. She seems way better just a bit irritable . I am just terrified she's going to start puking again. I will check on her a ton tonight . I swear motherhood has made me need medication for my stress and worry problems over my baby! Pregnancy hormones don't help. Let's hope we can all get some rest!
