Pain at night/bedtime

Lo turned 6 months last week and ever since then (Wednesday) she has been acting like she is in pain at bedtime. She cries and throws her head back (which seems to indicate pain) so I give her Tylenol and she's then able to drift off no problem. I don't understand because during the day at DC or my parents today she acts just fine and happy as can be. She also is not running a fever as I check that first thing anytime she acts this way. It makes me feel like a crumy mom at any rate :/ Any other lo's doing this?

Edit: Typo and to clarify I don't give her Tylenol every night but the two nights that I have she drifts off just fine. I always hesitate to give her any medicine because I don't want to put stuff into her body that she doesn't need.

Re: Pain at night/bedtime

  • I wouldn't give Tylenol since she is happy during the rest of the day. She may be overtired and fighting to sleep. You can try to let her nap late afternoon or put her to bed earlier.

  • @smlowe9311:   On nights that you don't give your LO any Tylenol does she wake up in the middle of the night whimpering/crying?

I am going to disagree with @hilalk (but ultimately talk to your OB about it). When I talked with my OB about it we came to the agreement that I could give Tylenol for no more that 6 days in a row, only at night. And to also try and start with a half dose (not a full dose). With having 24 hours in between doses there is very little risk (again, ask you OB).

I am all about LO's comfort. Have you tried teething tablets before bed? Could her arching of the back be related to over stimulation?

  • We are going through the same thing. Last night she was up every 30 min or so until 12:30. I had given Tylenol but apparently it was not working. The only thing to calm her was nursing. It has been a few days in a row & I'm guessing teething. I wish they would pop up already & stop causing pain. I feel so helpless :(

  • LO did this last night!!! She was up every 3 hours all night (was fine all day).
She would wake up whimpering which is normal, and then it would turn into full blown, inconsolble screaming-arched back and all. I literally just gave her 2 teething tablets... And they either work REALLY fast or it was a weird coincidence. But she calmed down immediately!

How long do teething tablets normally take to work?!
  • My LO has six teeth coming in on top and he is starting to get fussy at night crying and waking. He is fine during the day chewing on everything, but night he seems bothered. I'll be trying the Tylenol at night!
  • We're in the same boat. I've tried Tylenol and it works okay. I think ours is a mix of her being over tired and the fact that she's teething. We try to get her to sleep a little earlier, but she still fights it.

For those of you using teething tabs... which brand do you use? And did you all ask your doctor first? Just curious. Mine said Tylenol was okay but didn't mention the tablets nor did I ask about them. (I asked about Tylenol)

I'm wondering the same thing about teething tablets. The past 2 nights my LO has woken up at 12:30 screaming inconsolably - which is rare, especially to that extent. I think he might have some teeth ready to pop through, so I called the dr. and spoke with a nurse to get their take on teething tabs, she had no idea what I was talking about.

I don't want to push Tylenol too much as he isn't acting any differently during the day or at bedtime, it's just the MOTN wakings that are taking a toll on him and I feel terrible that he's on pain.

I use Hyland's. Somebody told me about a recall a while ago and advised me to use cautiously but I don't use it often and it helps tremendously.
