Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DD doesn't say Mama :(

DD is going to be 1 one Friday and she almost NEVER says Mama! I get so upset. She says 'da-da' all day long and says a bunch of different words.

Should I be concerned? Does anyone else's LO do this? I know I am being ridiculous but I am just curious....

Thanks ladies!

Re: DD doesn't say Mama :(

  • Our DD doesn't say mama, mami, mommy..nothing..zip BUT she will say daddy, papa, papi (we're Spanish) basically all forms of dad along with a bunch of other words.  I think it's just she doesn't pronounce the m's yet (or that's what I like to tell myself)..lol

  • It will come.  No need to worry. Dada is much easier to day than mama.  If you are home with LO, you are probably talking about "dada" and when he's coming home so LO hears the word "dada" much more than "mama."  DS is 18 months and only a month ago started saying mama on a regular basis.
  • My son is 1 and only says da-da and uh-oh... killlllsss meeee.

  • My DD turned 1 on the 3rd of March and she doesn't say Mama either. I think since she was like 6-7 months we have been in her face with mama mama but nope she does not say it. It kills me as well. She says dada, baba, occasionally fafa, gha? and zeezee. I brought it up to the ped at her one year appointment she wasn't concerned. I should mention this is the same ped who referred us to EI at the 9 month appointment because DD didn't babble consonants at all at 9 months. She said since she's saying baba, dada and some others and she is understanding demands (ex. go get your toy and bring it to me) and turns her head to whatever we are talking about (ex. book, car, flower, water...) the ped was not concerned. She said it'll come but she can't tell when...I think I may have a mini heart attack the day she actually says mama..It's been long anticipated!
  • My DD didn't say mama until 20 mos.  It's very common for LOs to say dada first.  D's are an easier sound than m's.  It doesn't mean anything.  Don't take it personally.
  • My son is 18 months and doesn't say anything! He has said daddy a few times but never mama. He talks the cutest gibberish ever, though, so I forgive him ;)
  • DS will say Dada and uses it towards him when he sees my husband. The only time he says Mama is when he is his bed crying and I'm still not 100% convinced he's talking about me.

  • @cbb722, thank you so much for this post. I really thought my DD must be the only baby that hasn't said mama yet. I feel somewhat relieved reading this post! I can check one worry off for now. :)
  • DD turns 1 on April 1st and says da-da, ka (referring to our dog Kane I'm pretty sure), boo/boom, and I think que (as in por que? we're bilingual english/spanish) and no Ma, Mami, Mama.  I try to get her to say it and I get nothing.  She is happy to see me when I get home from work and runs to me when she gets hurt or scared so I figure she knows I'm mama but just isn't big on the m sound yet.
  • Owen is almost 18 months and only in the last few weeks has he really truly been associating me with "mama" and really saying it toward me. Before we would ask him to say it and he would, but it never seemed to associate. He has said "dada" and associated it with DH for much longer.
I really think it comes from me being his primary parent and working with him more on face/name recognition by looking at photos. I suppose I have been far more likely to be pointing at a picture of DH and saying "dada" than pointing at a picture of myself and saying "mama".
He truly gets it now though, so I would just give it time.

This! My son is 14.5 months and I'll only hear mama if he's in full meltdown mode, and even then I'm pretty sure he's trying to say dada. What is even worse is I'll tell him to say, "mmmmmm" and he can make the "m" sound...then I'll say, "Say mama" and he'll laugh and go, "dada!" I wouldn't be worried yet.

  • DD says Mama FINALLY but it came after Dada, Daddy (which she says constantly), doggie, book, Gant (for Grant my DS), G (as in G-ma for Grandma), hi, bye... there are more that I'm forgetting. Try not to force it. They do things when they're ready. Btw most kids say dada before mama. It's just easier.

  • Ermm, DS is 23 months and still doesn't say Mama.  Granted, he's a bit of a 'late talker' and has really just had this word explosion over the last month or two, but I hear 'Daaadeeee' all day and never once a 'mommy'!  It'll come :)
  • My DS is the same. The only time he says mama is when he's really upset and wants something. Otherwise it's all dada all the time. It bums me out but I try not to take it personally.

I talked to the pedi about that how DS only says mamamamama when he's upset and it doesn't seem to be with meaning.  She said it's actually really common for children worldwide to make that sound when they are upset, mamama and the dadadadada sound when they are happy.  She said half jokingly that's probably where it came from baby is crying must need his 'mamamamama'.

OP: DS still isn't saying mama yet either.  He only has two words so far.
  • My DS is 14 months and says daddy, "got you!," hi, bye, wow, and yay. No mama. :)

  • My son only says "Mama!" when I'm not paying attention.  I usually am.  On the other hand, my husband usually isn't, so he says "Daddy!" a lot more often.
