Pumping at work for teachers

Hi,

I get 15 minutes of recess and 30 minutes of lunch every day so that is when I pump. I made it work with my first DD since I had low supply and she was an efficient nurser.

However, I'm finding that 15 minutes is not enough time this time around since I am producing more. Also new this time, I have lunch duty on certain days so there are kids in my class.

I don't want to cut out or shorten my sessions since I can actually build a stash now. Did your school block out time for you to pump or have someone cover your class while you pumped?

  • Do you have a planning period?   What grade do you teach (do your kids go to specials like PE, art, or music)?

  • I would talk to your principal. Legally they have to accommodate you. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard for them to take you off lunch duty.

  • Yes, my school just took me off the arrival duty and the lunch duty. So, I pump right before school starts, lunch and my planning period. I would definitely talk with your principal.

  • I teach middle school and I do have a planning period. However, we are on a rotating block schedule so it is at different times each day. Some days, it works out perfectly, but most days it does not.

I'm just trying to see what the best approach would be to get the extra time, no duties (so I can eat and pump at the same time) or to have someone cover parts of my class.

  • I am an elementary teacher and had these same concerns. I finally got brave enough to ask my principal if there was any way I could get coverage for my class so that I could fit in an additional pump during the day. He was so gracious, and it has been working now for the past two months! Don't be afraid to ask! It's amazing the response you may get!
