Babies: 0 - 3 Months

breast feeding question

I have been exclusively breast feeding my son who is two weeks old. at his last appointment he had lost weight so we've spent the weekend supplementing with formula to try and bring his weight up.  My supply is good, but I think he is a lazy eater, sucking/swallowing then falling asleep or pacifying.  What are some suggestions about him becoming a more efficient eater?  Will he ever catch on?

  • Whew! I hope so!  THanks!

  • DS was a lazy nurser. Try getting your son down to just a diaper to nurse. I'd also have a cool wash cloth and would periodically wipe it down his back, tickle his feet, and rub my knuckles lightly on his sternum/rib cage. I'd also massage the breast while he was nursing to basically help get more milk into his mouth with each suck. GL!

  • My son was a sleepy eater early on too. Like others have said, strip him down to his diaper, pump his arm while he's eating, tickle his cheek. You might even need to pull him off and hold him vertically and (gently of course) bounce him up and down to help him wake up.

He will get better! My LO is now almost four months and is a very enthusiastic eater. :)

  • If I were you I wouldn't offer him formula. That is just going to mess with your supply. I would up your feedings. Don't let him sleep for more then two hours at a time. Wake him & feed him. He will get the hang of it. Don't give up!!! GL!!
  • This happened to me. LO is not very aggressive and wasn't nursing well. He dropped weight, and our pedi recommended formula every other feed. 2 weeks later, he's totally off the formula. My LC thinks it took him awhile to get the hang of it and also took awhile for my milk to fully come in. I wouldn't hesitate to supplement with formula if that's what it takes. It can be successful -- and it's definitely possible that it will be a short term solution. The most important thing is making sure baby is fed and growing!!

  • I recommend working with a lactation consultant to make sure there aren't other issues like tongue tie or other common concerns.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • Offer often. In the beginning I was offering DS (a major sleeper) every hour. Drink lots of water & calorie load yourself throughout the day. Yes, it will be exhausting.

Rub his feet to keep him awake so he can get a good meal in. I found stripping them down & doing skin to skin helped baby be more active to nurse.

Your LO will get more efficient as he gets older. You just have to get over this little hump right here. Good luck.
